Air Dry. Once you’ve used your beach towel for the day, make sure you air dry it before throwing them in the laundry room. Allowing them to air dry, outside will help you manage them better when it’s time to wash them. Wet beach towels are heavy and hard to manage, especially when they’re soaking wet. Make it easier on your back by allowing them to air dry.
Remove Sand. You probably think more about getting beach sand out of towels when they’ve just been used, but it’s almost impossible to get sand out of a wet towel. That’s why it’s important to air dry first, then remove the sand. Get as much sand out as you can, before throwing them in the washer. Failing to remove as much sand as possible from your air dried beach towel can lead to a damaged washing machine.
Hot water can turn stuck sand into glue if you end up washing your beach towels with hot water before removing all the sand. This will thin the towel threads and make it feel stiff and coarse. In addition, it’s possible that the sand will embed into the fibers of the towels permanently, resulting in dirty looking towels that are no longer capable of feeling soft and flexible. Even more, the absorption will be compromised and the towels will eventually have to be thrown away.
Soak with Vinegar. Once you’ve air dried the towels and removed all sand, soaking them in white vinegar is key for maintaining the towels’s softness. This also helps get rid of any pesky sand grains that refuse to let go. The best process to follow for soaking your towels in vinegar is as follows:
- Fill the washer with hot water.
- Add one to two cups of white vinegar to the water.
- Add beach towels.
- Soak towels in hot water and vinegar for at least one hour.
- Run the washing machine as normal for towel laundering.
- Remove the towels from the washer and dry as normal.
To ensure you’ve removed all vinegar from the towels, you can do another quick rinse cycle with hot water before drying them. You might be wondering if you’ll need to add detergent to the mix of things and the answer is no. You can if you’d like, but vinegar is the most powerful natural cleanser that kills bacteria just as well as detergent does. So, if you’d like to use both, you can, but it’s not necessary!
