More Easy Laundry Detergent Substitute

Welcome back! We are here with more great tips on how you can do laundry without detergent! We all get a little behind in our lives and one thing that often gets pushed to the side is all things laundry! If you missed our last post, find more great ideas there.

Some other choices for laundry detergent that could be used in a pinch would be:

  • Shampoo: Use the smallest amount you can of a mild, gentle shampoo. Baby shampoo works great but make certain the shampoo has no added conditioners. It is recommended you use the sink or a tub for washing in order to control the suds.
  • Bar Soap: There are some bar soaps out there which are specifically for washing clothes. However, regular bar soap will work if it does not contain additives, perfumes, or other skin irritants. There are some bar soaps on the market just for laundry. These soaps work well for making your own laundry detergent. Shave some thin pieces into some hot water to dissolve them. Then you may wash as normal. This can also be used to treat stains by rubbing a bit of the soap into the stain before you launder.
Just like your shampoo other soaps such as bath wash or a hand washing soap can be used in a pinch as well. Follow the same directions as for using shampoo.
  • Dish-washing Liquid (not dishwasher) can also be used. With this, you will want to use a very small amount and be certain it does not contain any bleach.

Easy Laundry Detergent Substitutes

We have all been there. You gather the laundry up. Get it sorted and loaded into the washer. Open the cabinet and boom, no laundry detergent! You meant to write it on the grocery list but somehow it slipped your mind. Or someone else in the family used the last of it and forgot to tell you. Yes, we have all been there. Luckily for us, all this post will address what to do in a pinch to get the laundry done anyway. Our laundry services in Raleigh NC can help you get all your loads of clothing done, as well! Stop by if you need us.

Here are some great ideas for getting one more load done before your next shopping run:

  • If you still have the empty bottle of liquid detergent fill it up with some warm water. Next, give it a good couple of shakes. This should give you enough for one load of laundry. Just empty the entire thing into the washer. If you use powdered detergent, no problem. This can also be done in a box. Just be a little more careful when you stir it up. Most of us have a tendency to use too much detergent per load. In the modern high efficiency washing machines two teaspoons will clean an entire load of laundry really well. The washer’s agitation and the water will do the bulk of the cleaning. Be sure to pre-treat stains for the best clean. As always use the correct water temperature for the best clean.
  • If you use this method be sure to add some kind of enhancers like baking soda or a borax. Usually one-half a cup is the right amount. This will boost the detergent and help ensure your clothing gets as clean as possible. Put the booster into the washer before you add the clothes and detergent. The correct order would be the booster, detergent, garments, and then the water.

Common Dress Shirt Problems, Part Three

One of the most common dry-cleaning items we have is dress shirts. Men who work in a professional setting must have a pressed and ready shirt to wear for their job each and every day. To keep these dress shirts looking Great all of the time a little maintenance is required. Over the last couple of blog posts, we have been talking about how to take care of dress shirts and the issues that come from wearing them. We will continue in this post looking at various problems with shirts and how to correct them.

Dress shirts bring with them different types of problems. This can include color walls, fabric abrasion, tears and holes, and of course ring around the collar. These tears and holes come from ordinary wear and tear. As noted in our previous blog post an average shirt will last through 35 to 50 wash cycles. If it has not begun to show wear it soon will.

Let’s take a look at some common problems you will find with dress shirts and hopefully find some ways to prevent the early demise of your shirt. The first is a ring around the collar. Many of us will recognize this common problem simply because a company that promoted its detergent in years past always talked about how their detergent would give you “no more ring around the collar”. This ring around the collar Is a common laundry problem with the shirt. This is because as the shirt is worn the cuffs and the neckband and sometimes even where your collar folds down are always in contact with your skin and perspiration. Cologne, sunblock, body oil’s, will all affect this ring around the collar or around the cuff area. There are many detergents or stain remover’s which will help with this problem. An easy way to prevent this buildup from happening is to launder the shirt after each wear.

Another area that causes problems and issues with dress shirts is feeling as though the shirt has shrunk. Most companies allow for a 2% shrinkage in their shirts. However, shrinkage can occur from poorly stabilized materials from which the shirt is made. It is also been shown that even top-quality shirts will experience shrinkage after several washes. Most men will notice the shrinking in the collar of the shirt. This means you will want to take care to measure the proper sleeve length and neck size before purchasing a shirt.

In order to make certain you get the proper use of your dress shirt, get it cleaned or launder it yourself after each wearing. This helps to remove all of the body oils or stains that may occur. We also recommend that for best results you take your shirts to a professional cleaner. When a professional dry cleaner is used they will use a specialized laundry formula and press your shirts for a crisp finish. Trying to achieve this same professional look at home takes a lot of time that many of us do not have. Do note that the better care you take of your dress shirts the longer they will last, and you will look as professional as possible.

Common Dress Shirt Problems, Part Two

We are back with more common dress shirt problems that may be causing you stress during the work week! If you are constantly battling wrinkles, discoloration and more, this post is for you! Need help with your laundry during the week? Visit the best laundromat in Raleigh NC!

When it comes to problems with button down dress shirts biggest issue is that most are made of cotton or a cotton blend. Cotton holds up very well as far as the fabric is concerned, but typically it will break down or even wear out after a while. If you look at the statistic above these types of shirts are designed to be worn and cleaned 52 times. What that means for us is that if you have a favorite shirt and it’s been hanging around for a number of years and you’ve worn it often, then it is more than likely on its last legs, so it will be best to treat it especially carefully.

One of the first places that you may see that a shirt is coming to the end of its time is around the edges and the tips of the collar of the shirt. This is an area where normal wear and tear will show up pretty quickly on the shirt. Another area where you will begin to see wear and tear is in small tears that will show up on the sleeve of the shirt. This will often be noticed toward the bottom of the sleeve just above the sleeve placket. This area will begin to look worn and eventually from all of the wear and tear it will begin to show holes or an actual tear.
After many wears and washes, the stripes on your shirt will begin to fade. Sometimes one stripe or color will fade more than another on the shirt. This will be due to the yarn giving way. Eventually, you will see holes forming in the fabric. This will certainly mean that your shirt is on its way out.

Stay tuned for more common problems with dress shirts! Our next blog will have a few final things for you to consider when laundering and storing your dress shirts!
