Uncovering the Meaning of Washing and Drying Cycles

Hello! Today our Raleigh Laundromat is going to talk about the different types of washing and drying cycles, as well as other important washing and drying information. It’s hard to know what each of these mean and when they should be used, without proper explanation. Below, our Raleigh Laundromat offers an explanation of each cycle available:

Raleigh Laundromat: The Meaning of Different Cycles

Regular or Normal combines fast agitation with a fast spin cycle and is good for heavily-stained items, cottons, linen, denim, towels, and bedding.

Permanent Press combines fast agitation with a slow spin and is good for synthetic fibers (knits and polyesters) and prevents wrinkling.

Delicate Cycle combines slow agitation with a slow spin and is good for washable silks and wools.

Washing: Hand Washing

Fill a kitchen or bathroom sink with cool or warm water and a little detergent. Let your delicates soak for 15-20 minutes and then rinse in clear water two to three times. Hang dry. Not sure if you should hand wash it? Consider hand washing:

  • garments with embellishments
  • lingerie
  • anything with a hand wash only label
  • sheer fabrics

Drying: Cycles

Regular (High Heat) setting is good for whites, jeans, towels, sheets, linens, and items that are pre-shrunk. Do not use this setting with clothing washed in hot water.

Permanent Press (Medium Heat) setting prevents colored garments from fading and ensures your clothes do not wrinkle or lose their shape. Do not use this setting for delicates because they will lose their shape.

Delicate (Low Heat) setting uses a slower speed to gently dry fragile clothing and is good for knits and frail fabrics.

Drying: Hang or Flat Drying

Hang drying is the best method for sturdy items, cottons, polyesters, silks, and fabrics that do not stretch. A good tip is to pin your tops by the hemline to avoid bunching at the shoulders. Knits and wool sweaters should be dried on a flat surface.

Drying: Quick Tricks

  • Throw a clean dry towel in the dryer with wet clothes. The towel will help absorb the moisture, allowing the clothing to dry much quicker.
  • If clothes are dry, but wrinkled—a case of “you left them sitting in the dryer too long”—toss in a clean, damp towel and turn on the dryer for 15 minute intervals until wrinkles are gone.

Laundry Guidelines!

Welcome back! Are you ready to continue learning about the wonderful world of laundry?! Our Fluff and Fold in Raleigh went over a few key things in our last post:

  • Laundry is not an easy, wash-dry-fold process
  • Laundry labels on our clothing are hard to decode without a few tips
  • Separate laundry loads for a better wash

Today, we are going to offer a few tips on washing temperatures and detergent!

Washing Temperatures | Fluff and Fold Raleigh NC

Cold water eliminates shrinkage and color bleeding on new items with bright or dark coloring. It’s important to wash the following in cold water only!

  • Fine fabrics
  • Delicates
  • Sweaters
  • Denim
  • T-shirts
  • Cotton items

Warm water should be used when laundering whites and lights. Warm water and detergent helps lift dirt or stains away, as well as removing bacteria.

Hot water works great to remove serious stains. It’s also a great disinfectant for dish and bath towels or washcloths. In addition, hot water is a must for sheet sets and blankets!

Remember to Do a Last-Minute Check.  Before you wash your load of laundry:

  • Close zippers
  • Pretreat stains
  • Place delicates in a mesh bag for washing

Washing Detergents

  • Color-safe bleach works on all colors and helps removes stains.
  • Chlorine bleach helps brighten whites. Don’t make the mistake of using chlorine bleach on color fabrics, though!
  • Fabric softener is great for conditioning towels and clothing. It also helps to prevent static cling.

Tip: Does your machine have a bleach dispenser? If not, be sure to dilute the bleach with water before putting it in with your clothing! The same goes for fabric softener; if you don’t have a softener dispenser, use a fabric softener ball or dilute it with water first!

In our next post, our fluff and fold in Raleigh NC will talk more about laundry guidelines, mainly how washing cycles work. Decoding Laundry Labels on Clothing!

Our Raleigh Laundromat Helps Decode Laundry Labels!

It’s possible that you’ve been doing laundry for years; decades even. (Yikes!) Whether you do your laundry at home or a Raleigh Laundromat, chances are, you do laundry at least once a week. At this point, though you hate the thought of it, the concept of laundry is as simple as taking a shower or washing the dishes by hand. Right? Well, not exactly. Laundry is not a three step process that includes wash, rinse, dry, like we all might think. Instead, laundry is a bit more like a science project. Especially if you want to get rid of that ugly stain, avoid shrinking your favorite sweater, or keep your whites white.

In today’s post, and also during the next several posts, we will offer you a complete laundry guide. We will decode the mysterious labels that are supposed to help you protect your delicates, teach you how to speed the drying process, and more!

Label Check:

Trying to read the symbols on clothing labels is often almost impossible. It’s like a driving test nightmare! These quick tips will help you pass this difficult test without fail:

The symbol that looks like a mini washing machine symbol refers to temperature. A “machine” that contains one dot is for cold washing, two dots is for warm washing, and three dots is for hot washing. An X over the “machine” means dry clean only! It’s important to head to Laundry Express when you see this symbol!

The triangle shape found on labels symbolize the use of bleach; whether it’s OK or not. A plain white triangle means use with caution. An X covering the triangle means steer clear!

A circular symbol refers to the drying methods. A white circle means any type of heat is OK, a dot within the circle means low heat, two dots mean normal or medium heat, and three dots indicate high heat is OK.

Things to remember: separate lights, whites, darks, and delicates for a better washing experience. If you’re trying to stick with a sustainable household, feel free to combine your lights and whites to save on water!

In our next post, we will go over the water temperature options and when cold water washing is a must! In addition, we will talk about washing cycles and detergents! Coin Laundry Raleigh NC: Tips for using a Laundromat to do your weekly laundry!

Below, you’ll find a few tips that will help you take full advantage of having to take your laundry to a Raleigh Laundromat.

Have a Set Laundry Day

The key to keeping up with laundry, without an in-house unit, is having a “wash day.”  It might seem weird, letting the laundry pile up, but it’ll help out in the long run. Having a routine day to do the laundry helps cut down drive time and more.

Organize Dirty-Laundry Storage

When willingly letting the dirty laundry pile up, it’s important to implement a storage system for it all. Set up hampers in each bedroom and each bathroom. Make sure they’re large enough to hold each person’s laundry for an entire week.

Inside Clothing Line in the Bathroom

It’s a good idea to make some sort of clothesline in the bathroom to help dry towels and washcloths so that they can be used a second and possibly third time. There are retractable ones available that take up hardly any room and fit right over the door.

Also, you can utilize the clothesline after you’ve hand washed items like jackets, shirts, or other things you need before your next laundry day!
