Fun Laundry Trivia

We all know how totally boring a conversation about “doing the laundry” can be. Let’s look at some interesting facts about laundry in Raleigh NC. Laundry Express is here to help you with some fun trivia for laundry!

Here in America, laundry accounts for only 21 percent of your indoor water usage. Most would guess it uses the most. However, forty-one percent is used for flushing the toilet. If you have more than one bathroom in the home, then that is a much larger use of water. The average American family does 8–10 loads of laundry each week. A single load of laundry, from wash to dry, takes an average of one hour and twenty-seven minutes to do. This means we easily spend 8 to 10 hours on the average per week doing the laundry in Raleigh NC.

Think you do a lot of laundry? Well, if you wash and dry one load of laundry every day for the next 44 years, you just might do as much laundry as the laundry persons at Walt Disney World do in a single day. The laundry folks there wash an average of 285,000 pounds of laundry each day. They also send out somewhere in the neighborhood of 30,000 to 32,000 garments to be dry-cleaned daily. It takes a lot to keep Mickey looking good.

Some interesting laundry trivia include a look back in history. In August 1776, the British forces occupied New York City. Needing to get information about British troop movements was critical to General George Washington. However, the Patriot Army had no really good way to get this valuable information. In 1778, Benjamin Tallmadge recruited a small group of trusted men and women. The Culper Spy Ring began to use laundry to help them gather and pass along important information. Anna Smith Strong, whose husband local Patriot judge Selah Strong, was confined on the British prison ship HMS Jersey used the laundry on her clothesline to leave signals regarding where spies should gather to share information.

In the Civil War a laundress was paid from fees deducted from a soldiers’ pay. Each enlisted man had 50 cents withheld monthly, unmarried officers $1.00 to $2.00 monthly and married officers paid $4.00 monthly.

One of the largest outdoor laundry facility is Dhobi Ghat. Dhobi Ghat is found in Mumbai, India. Dhobis or washermen and their families start their laundry business early in the morning. The laundries are row upon row of concrete wash pens each with its own flogging stone. The clothes are dipped in soapy water, then beaten on the flogging stones then rinsed clean. The next day, the clothes are neatly pressed and delivered to the owners.

Keeping Clothes Bright At The Laundromat

Of course, having the time to take proper care of your clothes is most important. However, we understand that sometimes circumstances mean you will have to use a Raleigh laundromat instead of a home laundry. The good news is that you will be able to use these tips in a laundromat setting or at home.

One of the best tips we can offer is one that should be simple. A key to keeping the colors of your clothing from looking at faded and no longer bright is to actually wash your items as little as possible. This will mean that you take proper care of your items as they are worn. When you do launder them do so in as gentle a way as possible. Some clothing items will do better by being hand washed and not dried in a dryer. We also realize that some of these tips seem impractical. Most of us do not have the time it takes to hand wash and line dry. We can learn how to adjust and keep our close looking as broad as possible at the Raleigh laundromat.

  • When preparing your clothing for laundering take the time to turn your clothes inside and out. This will help prevent the washing machine and dryer from producing wear and tear on your clothing while it is being laundered. If you decide to learn dryer outside this will become really important as the sun can actually remove color from your clothing.
  • Always wash your clothes in cold water. Unlike detergent’s in the past today’s laundry detergent will work just as well in cold water temperatures as they do in a hotter temperature.
  • Always take the time to sort your clothing before you leave for the laundromat. Also, keep in mind that dark colors will fade more if they are not laundered with like colors.
  • Taking the time to read the care label inside your laundry items will also ensure your clothing does not fade in the wash. This is where you will locate the best instructions for washing your clothing.
  • Adding white vinegar to your rinse cycle can also prevent colors from fading. There is no need to worry about the smell as the vinegar will fade away in the wash.
  • When it comes to setting the cycle on your washer always choose a gentle or hand wash cycle. This is also true for drying your clothing. Overdrying is bad for all of your laundry but particularly for bright clothing.

Can I Use Non-HE Detergent in a HE Washer?

Laundry has certainly evolved over the years. One of the biggest advances has been in the types of washers and the washing detergents they require. In our last post, we discussed the newer high efficiency washing detergents and how they are used in both standard and HE washers. This one will look at the use of non-HE detergents in a high efficiency washer.

HE Washers and Non-HE Detergent – Will it Work? | Raleigh Laundromat

First let’s look at what HE washing machines are. These are washers that use less water in the wash and rinse cycles. These newer washers are designed to be the most energy efficient on the market today. They are designed to also use less energy than washers manufactured in previous years. Most are recognized as an HE washer because of their front-loading capacity. In recent years top load machines have been added to the HE lineup. Front loading machines have been used in European countries for years. These washers came into the American market in the mid-2000s.

Before the rise of high efficiency washers in America most of us thought the best way to make certain our laundry was as clean as possible one had to use loads of detergent and water to create lots of suds. The soapy suds then were supposed to get our laundry really clean. Most standard machines on the market today will use up to 41 gallons of water with each and every load. Today’s HE washers only use an average of 28 gallons or less with most using as little as 14 gallons per load. This will save on average 6.000 gallons of water a year per family.

The biggest concern when it comes to HE washers is in the detergents used. While technically any detergent including the HE types can be used in a standard washer the same is not true for a high efficiency washer. The use of a non-HE detergent can cause confusion in your machine’s computer board and cause damage to the washer. Your machine could stop and your clothes may not be cleaned and rinsed properly. The cost of an HE detergent is compatible with other types so there is no reason not to use one.

As we noted in our previous blog post with any detergent, we recommend that you read the directions carefully. If you feel you need to fill the soap dispenser up for more effective cleaning, then add water with the HE detergent to fill the dispenser. Refrain from using too much detergent. Follow directions as they’re written on the detergent box. When too much detergent of any kind is used clothes will not clean enough. Excess soap leaves your clothing with a residue that will make them look and feel dingy. This is true of either type of washers.

Will HE Detergent Work In An Older Washer?

Chances are if you have bought a washing machine in recent years you have purchased a HE washer. HE is a term that means High Efficiency. This post will look at this type of washer and the detergents that can be used safely in them.

Understanding HE Detergent and Older Washers | Coin Laundry Raleigh NC

An HE washing machine is one that uses less water in the wash and rinse cycles. They are designed to be as energy efficient as possible. They use way less energy than washers manufactured in previous years. You will most likely see an HE washer in the front loading capacity but in recent years top load machines have been added to the HE lineup. Front loading machines have been the norm in many European countries for years. They hit the American market in the mid to late 2000’s.

Prior to the HE washers become more mainstream we here in America thought the best way to tackle the laundry was to use loads of detergent and water to create suds. The suds then were supposed to get our laundry really clean. The problem is that standard machines will use up to 41 gallons of water with each and every load. Today’s HE washers only use an average of 28 gallons or less. Many will use a mere 14 gallons per load. It is estimated this will save the average family at least 6.000 gallons of water yearly.

The biggest concern when it comes to HE washers is in the detergents used. A standard washer that is not rated HE can use most any detergent including the HE detergents. An HE detergent is considered a concentrate so you must remember to use less. This translated to less is more. The regular top loading machines will use more water but will only need a 1/4 cup of a high efficiency detergent to get your clothes clean.

Keep in mind that while using a high efficiency detergent in a standard washer is fine you may lose the fragrance of the detergent. Since many consumers purchase with the smell in mind this could be a problem. If this is not an issue for you then give one of these high efficiency detergents a try. Because it is a concentrate and you will use less it can save you money.

As with any detergent we recommend that you read the directions carefully. If you feel you need to fill the soap dispenser up for more effective cleaning then add water with the HE detergent to fill the dispenser. If you do not follow the directions to the letter and over pour the detergent to be prepared. When too much detergent of any kind is used clothes are not clean enough. Excess soap leaves your clothing with a residue that will make them look and feel dingy. Measure correctly and you should have no problems.

Understanding Concentrated Laundry Detergent

In today’s fast-paced market, it is easy to become confused about some name changes on our most used products. One of these products is laundry detergent. Laundry detergents have certainly come a long way over the last 10 to 15 years. At one time there were only a few to choose from. This blog post will look at concentrated detergent products and how to pick and use the right one for your laundry in Raleigh NC.

In earlier years washing machines were simpler to use. You simply lowered the laundry into the washer, put in your detergent, pushed a few selections, and then the start button. The selections were very limited and basic. Machines today allow you the user to select from many options in order to do your laundry properly.

When consumers are looking for the right laundry detergent, it can be overwhelming. When you look at the lineup in your local big box store you will see there are many brands and types of laundry detergent available in today’s world. Each of these options promises to clean your laundry in the best way possible. Most of them will get the job done but some can become very pricey. In addition to regular laundry detergent, some will be advertised as a 2X or 3X laundry detergent. Some will also be advertised as an HE detergent. To understand what these are we will look at them individually.

Laundry detergent has always been available in a concentrated formula. Concentrated detergents are thicker and have less water in the product than ordinary ones. The biggest draw for them is that they are smaller in size and easier to take with you or to bring home from the grocery store. Concentrated detergent requires you to also use less of the product. They will also take up less room when storing them on store shelves or even in your laundry area. In today’s market, the single use laundry pods have become very popular. You simply throw one of these pods which are concentrated laundry detergent into the washer and that’s it. The concentrated amount of detergent in the pod will be enough to clean your whole load of laundry in Raleigh NC.

These newer concentrated detergents have certainly simplified doing our everyday laundry. It takes the guesswork out of the question of how much detergent to use. The new HE washing machines also require a specific kind of laundry detergent that is labeled HE. HE means high efficiency. Using a regular detergent in these machines can damage or cause your clothes not to get as clean as they should.

There are benefits to these concentrated detergents. The first is their impact on the environment. These products have fewer fillers and water and the packaging is much less than other detergents. Less paper and plastic packaging mean less recycling. Less water use and product use mean huge savings for you. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions for the right use of the products.
