Cleaning Your Laundry Appliances

wash dry fold raleigh ncCleaning Your Laundry Appliances | Wash Dry Fold Raleigh NC

With spring on its way, most homeowners are thinking about spring cleaning. In our last post, we offered tips on how to spring clean your laundry routine. While making sure your routine is set and sound, it’s also important to make sure you spring clean your laundry appliances! Yes, we are talking about the washer, dryer, iron and other appliances needed to make that laundry routine happen!

If these items aren’t cleaned properly at least once a year (preferably twice a year) your laundry routine can be halted for various reasons.

Iron | Wash Dry Fold Raleigh NC

Some of us only use our irons when we absolutely have to. Ironing isn’t anyone’s favorite chore, of course, but some choose to only iron when there’s no other option (wrinkle release, dryer, etc.). Those that use theirs infrequently need to clean the iron just as those that use it daily do. To ensure your iron is clean and ready to work follow the instructions from realsimple.com:

  1. Mix water and baking soda. Make a paste of 1 tablespoon water and 2 tablespoons baking soda
  2. Apply the paste to the iron. Using a spatula, spread the paste on the iron’s plate, coating the areas that have mineral deposits
  3. Wipe iron clean
  4. Clean steam holes
  5. Re-fill the reservoir
  6. Turn on the steam
  7. Pour out the liquid

Washer

Cleaning your washer is imperative. Many people never think twice about washing their washer. After all, it does sound a bit silly. Why wash something that washes all the time?! On the contrary, your washer gets very dirty. Cleaning it regularly helps keep it from depositing dirt into your laundry load as it washes. In addition, the washer can harbor odors that come out in your clothing as they’re being washed, as well. Clean those washers with a step by step tutorial from our previous post!

Dryer

In addition to improving its efficiency in drying and preventing a fire from happening, your dryer needs to be cleaned monthly to ensure that the lint filters are cleaned and working properly. Once a year, you should take a vacuum attachment and vacuum in the vent area, while it’s open to try and get loose lint out that has fallen behind the filter.

More Laundry Tips!

fluff and fold Raleigh NCMake Your Time in the Laundry Room More Efficient! | Fluff and Fold Raleigh NC

Are you struggling to keep up with the family laundry? If so, Laundry Express, fluff and fold in Raleigh NC, is here to help! The information below will help you learn to make your time in the laundry room more efficient with these easy to do tips!

  • Make your own detergent. The chemicals in store bought laundry detergent can cause skin rashes, as well as, cause your clothing to wear quicker. Making your own is easy. Follow the step by step tutorial from a previous blog post to make your own laundry detergent!
  • For softer, long-lasting towels, skip dryer sheets. Doing so will also help them to remain more absorbent. To make sure they stay soft, add a bit of vinegar into the wash, along with your regular detergent! It’ll also help keep away the mildew smell that older towels sometimes get.
  • If your towels are older and have seen better days, consider switching to vinegar and baking soda as the laundry detergent.
  • Sort your laundry before washing it. To help keep up with sorting, tack up a reminder board and wash different sets of clothing on specific days.
  • Unshrink clothes using baby shampoo and a towel. Having an issue with shrinking clothing? Unshrink them by following Walmart.com’s tip: Just soak the shrunken piece of clothing in lukewarm water and baby shampoo, work through to relax the fibers, and gently stretch. Then, roll the article of clothing up in a towel to allow it to further stretch and absorb extra water.
  • Tired of making a loud racket when drying your tennis shoes? Knot each shoe’s laces together and wedge them into the dryer door before shutting it. It’ll dry the shoes without that dreaded banging sound for an hour!
  • Use a salad spinner to remove excess water from smaller articles of clothing you’d rather keep out of the dryer.
  • Invest in a few dryer balls. They work better than dryer sheets and last much longer!
  • Want family members to start helping with the laundry chores? Label baskets for each member so that they can start putting away their own laundry. Then, as they refill it, they can start learning to wash their own clothing.

Laundry Tips!

Are you looking for a few laundry tips that will help you make your routine more efficient and improve the look of your clothing!? If so, you’ve come to the right place! Our Raleigh laundromat is here with a few tips that will help you improve your laundry routine and keep clothes looking fresh, new and wrinkle free!

Laundry Tips | Raleigh Laundromat

  • Keep your bright clothing bright and prevent color bleeding on the first wash by adding a teaspoon of salt to the wash.
  • Wash all dark clothes inside out to keep them from fading.
  • Make sure your detergents work well with cold water. Some detergents require hot or warm water in order to clean properly.
  • Keep your sweaters in shape by drying them flat instead of on a hanger.
  • All items that easily stretch should be laid on a hanging rack or any flat surface.
  • Clean your washer regularly. Fill it up with hot water and pour in at least a cup of bleach. Let it sit an hour and then drain. Fill the washer up again and drain to ensure that the washer is free and clear of bleach!
  • Don’t count any stain out! Be sure to research each type of stain and how it can be removed before you discard clothing thinking that it’s ruined!
  • Save time and energy by throwing a dry towel into your dryer with your wet laundry. This will reduce moisture in the dryer and speed up the whole process.
  • Smelly jeans? Instead of throwing them right in the wash, stick them in the freezer or outside during freezing temps beforehand. The chill will kill any odor!
  • Hate ironing? Try to eliminate wrinkled shirts and dresses by hanging them up when they’re three quarters of the way dry. They’ll dry the rest of the way while they’re hanging, wrinkle free! The key is to never let items sit in the dryer.

While getting ready for your spring cleaning, don’t forget to add your laundry routine to the list!

That’s right, your laundry routine probably needs work, whether you realize it or not! And, the good thing about it is, you have the opportunity to pre-spring clean your laundry routine! Getting ahead and making sure your routine is only a few steps can make your load easier throughout the rest of the year. In addition, you’ll have more time to spend outdoors this spring, enjoying the beautiful weather!

Set a Family Laundry Routine | Coin-Op Laundry Raleigh NC

To begin setting a family laundry routine, you must choose a day of the week that fits each member’s lifestyle. If you’re kids aren’t yet old enough to do their own laundry, have them at least gather all their dirty laundry or take clean laundry to their rooms. Believe it or not, children three years and older can begin helping with sorting, folding and putting the laundry away!

To start your new family laundry routine, laundry.about.com suggests to “Begin by streamlining laundry. Place two hampers in each bedroom or bathroom and teach family members to sort clothing by light and dark. Will it work better to rotate bed changing so that all the linens are not soiled at one time? Call a family meeting and discuss the changes. There may be some protests but doing laundry is one skill that everyone should know.”

Pre-spring cleaning, in general, is a great idea! Why not get all the cleaning chores out of the way now, while the weather is cold and the days are shorter? To learn how to pre-spring clean your whole laundry room, visit back with us, next blog post!
