Laundry Tips and Tricks

Looking for ways to lessen your laundry load this summer? We’ve got some great tips for you that will do just that! Why waste your summer bogged down with laundry load after load when you can do a few tricks to help keep things at a minimum!?

Laundry Tips and Tricks | Fluff and Fold Raleigh NC

Boost Your Detergent – Sometimes our laundry detergent doesn’t work as well as we hoped it would. Instead of going to purchase a different brand, try enhancing the one you have. Add baking soda to a washing machine’s rinse cycle to help your clothes become more thoroughly rinsed. They will fight the stain accumulation that can sometimes come with hard water. The baking soda helps the detergent work better and acts as a deodorizer for clothing with a bit of odor, as well. They’ll also feel softer!

Lint Remover – According to Good Housekeeping, “If you have a cat or dog that sheds, you probably have a lint roller or two lying around the house. If you’re not used to lint or hairs on your clothes — or if you’ve had to roll one too many shirts and are out of sheets — you may be desperate for a solution, but don’t start tearing off pieces of scotch tape yet. Using three inch slivers of tape at a time will make you run through an entire roll before your pants are a solid black again; there’s a more efficient way to get the job done. Make your own lint remover by rolling up an old magazine or thin mail-order catalog and wrapping wide adhesive tape around it so the sticky side faces out. Pass it lightly over clothing or upholstery fabric to remove lint, bits of thread and stray hairs. You’ll cover a bigger surface area.”

Wash Often – Having a designated laundry day tends to be too much to handle. Especially if you have children, one laundry day a week can end up taking you a full eight or more hours! Instead, try washing a load a day. Even if you don’t have enough laundry to do every single day, do a small load a few times a week! Throwing in a load of towels while you pick the kids up from school and then drying them when you get back can make a big difference. You can fold them while you watch your nightly TV show!

Set Reminders – It’s a given, that if you choose to start washing a small load of laundry every day or few days, that you’ll more than likely forget they’re in the washer. Or, you’ll forget they’re in the dryer. Until you get in the swing of multiple laundry days, this will happen and happen often! Instead of having to re-wash or iron your life away, start setting timers on your cell phone. That way, you’ll never forget to change over the laundry or fold and hang the freshly dried clothing!

We hope these tips help you keep your your laundry load to a minimum this upcoming summer season so you can spend more time doing fun activities outdoors! Go to the lake, zoo or beach without worrying about extra laundry!

Dry Cleaning vs. Traditional Laundry Cleaning

Are you considering having your clothing dry cleaned but aren’t sure what the difference between it and regular laundry cleaning is? Those that choose to use a Raleigh Laundromat to help with their laundry chores might be confused as to which method they need. Below, you’ll find a detailed list of the differences between the two. Then, you’ll be able to make a decision as to which items need to be dry cleaned and which don’t!

Differences in Dry Cleaning and Laundry Cleaning | Raleigh Laundromat

  • Chemical solvents are used during the dry cleaning process. These chemicals rinse the garments clean. There is no water used during this cleaning process. Traditional laundry cleaning uses water and a detergent to get clothing clean.
  • Perchloroethylene, the chemical used to dry clean, can remove dirt, grease and other stains from clothing. Soapy detergent and softeners are used to clean the traditional way. These detergents work with water to remove stains and soiled areas of clothing.
  • The dry cleaning process does involve a machine that tumbles the clothing until they’re clean. The solvent is then often reused for other clothing. Traditional laundry involves a washing machine that goes through an agitation cycle and rinse to get clothing clean.
  • Dry cleaning uses a special machine to clean and dry, where traditional laundry cleaning uses a regular washing machine to clean clothes, and then a dryer to dry them.
  • Both dry cleaned clothing and traditional laundry cleaned clothing are steamed or ironed to get out all the wrinkles.

As you’re able to tell, dry cleaning is completely different from traditional laundry cleaning. There are different methods, machines and of course, the lack of water with dry cleaning that set it apart from regular laundering.

If you’re unsure of which method is right for you, be sure to visit back with us, next blog post. We will offer a few advantages of both dry cleaning and traditional laundering. To learn about the benefits of both, visit back with us, soon!

Benefits of Traditional Laundering

Choosing to have your laundry cleaned the traditional way offers a great deal more benefits than dry cleaning does. Unless your clothing labels specifically state that the items need to be dry cleaned, take advantage of all the benefits traditional laundry cleaning has to offer.

Traditional Laundry Cleaning Benefits | Coin-Op Laundry Raleigh NC

  • No harsh chemicals that can be detrimental to the environment and our health.
  • Traditional laundry cleaning rarely leaves one with a skin reaction to the detergent used. Dry cleaning chemicals often irritate sensitive skin.
  • Traditional laundry cleaning is much more cost efficient.
  • Clothing has a freshly washed smell after being washed in a machine with detergent.
  • Dry cleaned clothing often smells of the chemical used.
  • Dry cleaned clothes don’t always feel soft or silky after they’ve been cleaned the way traditional laundering does.
  • Traditional laundering offers an energy efficient bonus! Dry cleaning uses up to 50% more energy than traditional laundering does.

There are fabrics that must be dry cleaned, even if you’re unsure of the dry cleaning process and chemicals used. These fabrics are delicate and need the waterless process that dry cleaning offers. To learn more about how to decide whether or not specific fabrics need dry cleaning or not, visit back with a previous post.

Making sure you dry clean fabrics that need it is important. Don’t make the mistake of washing something that has a dry cleaning only label, as the fabrics might not hold up as you expect them to!

The Proper Way to Wash Beach Towels

Ever wondered how to properly launder your beach towels? If so, you’ve come to the right place! Laundry Express, Raleigh laundromat, is here to help you keep your beach towels fresh, clean and soft all summer long, no matter how many times they’re used!

Washing Beach Towels | Raleigh Laundromat

Air Dry. Once you’ve used your beach towel for the day, make sure you air dry it before throwing them in the laundry room. Allowing them to air dry, outside will help you manage them better when it’s time to wash them. Wet beach towels are heavy and hard to manage, especially when they’re soaking wet. Make it easier on your back by allowing them to air dry.

Remove Sand. You probably think more about getting beach sand out of towels when they’ve just been used, but it’s almost impossible to get sand out of a wet towel. That’s why it’s important to air dry first, then remove the sand. Get as much sand out as you can, before throwing them in the washer. Failing to remove as much sand as possible from your air dried beach towel can lead to a damaged washing machine.

Hot water can turn stuck sand into glue if you end up washing your beach towels with hot water before removing all the sand. This will thin the towel threads and make it feel stiff and coarse. In addition, it’s possible that the sand will embed into the fibers of the towels permanently, resulting in dirty looking towels that are no longer capable of feeling soft and flexible. Even more, the absorption will be compromised and the towels will eventually have to be thrown away.

Soak with Vinegar. Once you’ve air dried the towels and removed all sand, soaking them in white vinegar is key for maintaining the towels’s softness. This also helps get rid of any pesky sand grains that refuse to let go. The best process to follow for soaking your towels in vinegar is as follows:

  • Fill the washer with hot water.
  • Add one to two cups of white vinegar to the water.
  • Add beach towels.
  • Soak towels in hot water and vinegar for at least one hour.
  • Run the washing machine as normal for towel laundering.
  • Remove the towels from the washer and dry as normal.

To ensure you’ve removed all vinegar from the towels, you can do another quick rinse cycle with hot water before drying them. You might be wondering if you’ll need to add detergent to the mix of things and the answer is no. You can if you’d like, but vinegar is the most powerful natural cleanser that kills bacteria just as well as detergent does. So, if you’d like to use both, you can, but it’s not necessary!

We hope these tips will help you keep your beach towels cleaned, soft and ready to use all summer long! For more laundry tips, be sure to visit back with our blog, soon!
