  • Finally when clothing is to be returned to you you should be contacted before delivery to ensure you are available and if not the clothing should remain with the Laundromat for safekeeping.

Finding ways to manage our lives and make them a little easier should be a top priority especially with a large family.  A laundry service could just be the key you are looking for to help you gain some much needed stress relief.

Establishing a Laundry Routine – Tips

Laundry Tips for a New Routine | Wash Dry Fold Raleigh NC

Believe it or not one of the most dreaded and hated chores around the house is doing the laundry!  As we have been talking about over the last couple of blogs more than half of the battle is establishing a laundry routine that works for you and your family.  From finding the perfect baskets and hampers to deciding which days you devote to this time consuming chore you can create and maintain a great routine.

One of the most important parts of taking control and creating order is to involve the family.  It is the key to to begin gaining control and hopefully even loving this chore a bit more.  One of the reasons for dis-liking this chore so much is that it seems never ending with no schedule and no help.   Depending on how small or how large your family is the jobs associated with doing the laundry can be broken down into easily managed tasks by all ages.  The first thing you will have to keep in mind is they will make mistakes.

If your children are old enough they can help with gathering the laundry baskets and carrying them down to the laundry room or area.  This task will be easier if everyone has helped to pre-sort the clothing into whites, dark’s, and colors.  Also keep in mind that delicate’s will need a place of their own.   Once sorted it will be easy to carry that days laundry to the washer for you.

Explaining to the children the difference between clothing that is ready for washing and clothing that is gently worn will also help cut down on unnecessary washing.  Church type clothing is an example of this if only worn briefly and not showing signs of obvious dirt or stains.   Teach them to hang up those articles of clothing as soon as they shed them.

A great tip for avoiding set in stains is to also to teach all members of the family to point out stains for pre-treating as soon as they possibly can.  Another tip is to put clothespins on the side of the laundry baskets and have them pin one to any clothing that may need extra attention.   Also teach them to clean out the pockets of pants and shirts and to turn clothing the right way to save on time later.

Kids also love to help with chores that let them use the machines.  Let them help load the washer and then help transfer clothing to the dryer.  Adding the laundry detergent you have measured out or putting the dryer sheet in the dryer are both ways to begin teaching them the mechanics of washing clothes.  Kids also can match socks and help fold linens such as towels, washcloths, and dish towels at a very early age.  Older children can help fold bulky items such as bedding, sheets, and blankets.

Laundry is a fact of life for all of us so it is a very good idea to get children involved at a very early age.  As stated earlier yes they will make mistakes but the life skills you teach them will stay with them and make them responsible adults later on.  Establishing and maintaining a laundry routine will have a tremendous effect on the smooth running of your home  with less stress and more fun for all.

Establishing a Laundry Routine – Choosing the Best For You!

folded-443509_640Last time we talked about what goes into establishing a laundry routine.  There are briefly several questions you must ask yourself before attempting to calm the beast know as our laundry.  We first need to establish how many loads of clothes and other items need to be done in a week.  Next how much time do you have to spend on this never ending chore. Lastly we need to decide what types of stuff need to be washed and how often they need washed.

Once these basic questions have been answered we are ready to choose which laundry routine works for us.  There are several steps that will help us get organized and more toward a good maintainable routine for the laundry.

Choosing the Best Routine | Coin-Op Laundry Raleigh NC

Step 1:  This step involve deciding where to place whatever means you will use to collect your laundry.  This includes baskets, hampers, and organizer sorters.  These will be used to help with not only collecting but sorting the clothing ahead of time.  Make this simple enough even for the children in the family.  Figure out the locations that work best and place your laundry collection container there.  These location include bathrooms, bedrooms, and of course the mudroom where you enter the house.  You do not want to go overboard with the amount of containers since you will also need to collect them for the wash day.

Step Two:  Now that you have established where to collect the laundry throughout the home and gathered the necessary containers its time to implement the system you have chosen.  Sorting the laundry is one of the most time consuming parts of doing the laundry.  You may have the room to add additional baskets or hampers to allow the family to sort the whites, dark’s, and colors for you ahead of time.  If so this will greatly cut down on your time.  If not at least make sure you have a way to sort them easily in your laundry area. If this is a separate laundry room then there are a variety of of laundry sorters available to make this job even easier.  Some are even stackable to save room.

Step Three:  Gathering, Sorting, Washing and Drying the clothing is just the first half of this time consuming chore.  You must put a great deal of thought into how the cleaned laundry will get folded, and returned to its proper location and put up.  A good way to do this is to have a set of rotating baskets used to not only carry the laundry to the laundry room but to also carry it back when done.  Just as we do not want our laundry to pile up when its dirty we certainly do not want it to pile up when its clean.

Step Four:  The last step in establishing a great working system for laundry is to develop a system or routine that WORKS for YOU and your family.  Some like doing a load a day…all the way through from wash to putting up…every single day.  For others twice a week or every other day works well also.

Of course the key to not only establishing a routine is consistency.   We hope you have found some helpful ideas when it comes to getting organized and ready to calm the stress laundry can cause.  If something does not work for you then keep looking for solutions.  In our next blog we will talk about ways to involve the entire family in the routine of keeping the laundry done!

If you are too far behind on your laundry chores and need help catching up before implementing the new family laundry routine, stop by our Raleigh laundromat! We offer many different services including a coin-op laundry in Raleigh NC, dry cleaning, laundromat and more!

Establishing A Laundry Routine – Overview

One of the hardest routines for us to establish and maintain is a laundry routine.  No matter how much we hate it doing the wash on a regular basis is something that has to be done.  Not only our day to day clothing but bath towels, sheets, dish towels and more must be washed regularly.  Creating a schedule for our laundry will keep it from becoming our own “Mt. Washmore”!

Laundry Routine | Raleigh Laundromat

One of the worst things we are sure you will agree is a last minute panic created when you realize a uniform or an important outfit did not get washed.  In order to keep the chaos at bay asking yourself a few simple questions that will help in establishing a laundry plan.

First:  Who is in charge of the laundry and how many loads is the family doing in a week?  In a larger family this can easily be six or more loads.  This also needs to include sports stuff and any other extracurricular activities that require special clothing.  A smaller family of course will have three or four loads a week.  Realistically we all have more laundry than we think in a weeks time so this stage of planning is critical if we hope to get this part of our household chores under control.

Second:  you will need to establish what days and times can you fit doing laundry into the families schedule.  Let’s face it we are all busy so this takes some planning.  Can you throw a load in before leaving for work in the morning and into the dryer when you get home?  Would this need to be at least one load a day or will one load every other day work best?  You must be realistic about the scheduling so that only the laundry gets done during this time.  If you have help from the family in this area then getting the laundry routine established will be even easier.

Third:  Establish what needs washed and when.  Also decide how often certain items need washed.  You must also take in to account that laundry must be separated into whites, brights, and dark’s.  Some items must be washed separately  such as delicate items.  These items will tend to be a much smaller load and done in between the normal loads.  A simple way to handle bedding and linens is to first decide how often they need washed. For example bed sheets and pillowcases.  Once a week or twice a month?  You may want to establish certain day of the week for these items such as Saturday.

Lastly you must decide if you enjoy or if you really hate doing the laundry.  If you really hate it then it is much harder to establish and get into the routine of doing the laundry.  We tend to let it pile up into “Mt. Washmore” and then try to attack it in a laundry frenzy over a period of a couple of days.  This is the best reason for creating a good laundry schedule.  Spreading it out over the week keeps you from feeling overwhelmed and attached to the laundry room for hours at a time.

Answering these questions in a realistic way about your families approach to the laundry in your home will hopefully get you ready for the next phase.  Over the next few weeks we will talk more about choosing the best routine for your particular situation.  We will also give tips on how to establish a laundry routine that fits you.  Hopefully by trial and error you will be able to decide what works for you and once and for all you can slay “Mt. Washmore” once and for all.

Summer Laundry Tips, Continued!

We can all agree that with every generation mothers have been very busy.  We’d be willing to say that modern day moms are the busiest of all. We are all just way to busy!  Our biggest issue by far is finding ways to simplify and get it all done.  We are all different and so are the busy lives we lead so each of us have our own unique ways of doing things.

If you are anything like us, we are always looking for a way to establish routines that help us get through the mountains of laundry summer time brings.  Juggling  a full-time job, family, and all of the home chores that come with being a wife and mom.

In our previous blog, we talked about establishing a laundry routine particularly for these busy summer months full of fun and playtime.  In this post we are going to continue with tips to help ease the strain of extra laundry and hopefully make this chore a bit simpler for you and your family.

Tips | Coin-Op Laundry in Raleigh NC

1.  In our very busy lives the clothes dryer has become one of the most convenient appliances and one most of us feel we cannot live without!  However, if you live in an area where you have a backyard, there is nothing that rivals the sunshine for drying your linens and sheets.  The smell of those linens after a day of drying outside is like nothing else on earth.  You also save on electricity and can enjoy some time outdoors in the sunshine while hanging your laundry.

2.  There is no doubt that doing Laundry is one of our most boring of chores but you can also get in a little down time while waiting between loads.  You can pop in some music or use your earbuds and smartphone app to enjoy your time or simply take some time to enjoy a summer time novel you have been wanting to get started on.

3.  Sort….Sort….Sort.  Use creative ideas to get that laundry sorted ahead of wash time.  There are numerous ways to encourage your family to help with this task and make moms job even easier.  Hampers with three sections for whites, dark’s, and colors are great as well as an extra for delicate’s.   This ensures that you can get the laundry straight into the washer saving valuable fun-time for Mom.

4.  Learn to accept some help from the family.  Children love to help fold and put away clothes from a really early age.  What better time to start teaching them how to become responsible for their own laundry.  Of course we have to lower our expectations and our (my) tendency toward perfectionism!  This leads to children being able to wash their own laundry as they get older thus freeing Mom from this task.

5.  As noted in our previous blog post one of the best ways to stay on top of the mountain of laundry is to do a load a day from beginning to end…..Just one!  But for summer,  we do suggest you give yourself a day off.  Taking one day a week to spend fun time with the family without the hassles of laundry and cleaning will give you more satisfaction and certainly more wonderful memories than one can imagine.

Lastly we all know how summer means different laundry stains than any other time of year so here are a few extra tips for those special summer time stains:

  • Sweat Stains:  Rub the affected area with a bar soap before putting in to washer.  A mix of vinegar and hot water can also help to get rid of this type stain.
  • Ice Cream Stains:  Soak for 10 minutes in cold water then add dish detergent to the stain and allow to sit at least 30 minutes then rinse and launder as usual.
  • Mud Stains:  Brush off as much of the excess mud as possible.  Soak with a mixture of water, vinegar, and a squirt of dish detergent. Rinse well and then launder as usual.

Summer is a beautiful wonderful time of the year and vacationing with the family is one way to enjoy all that glorious relaxing time.  If you find yourself overwhelmed either before or after your vacation time stop by and drop off or arrange for pick up and delivery of your laundry at Laundry Express, coin-op laundry in Raleigh NC.  We will help you get your laundry done so that you can get on with spending time this summer outside and having fun with family and friends this season.
