Organizing the Laundry Room Part 1

If like us, you like things to be as organized as possible around the home, then this is the article for you!  Being organized helps us  to not only minimize our work load as much as possible but saves us that all important TIME as well.

One of the places we most need this super-organization is the number one area of the home we tend to neglect the most; the laundry room. Doing the laundry is a huge time consuming task that we must do yet its the one area we don’t put a lot of thought into.

Organize Your Laundry Room! | Coin Laundry in Raleigh

Most laundry rooms, nooks, closets and more, are really cramped either with all the “stuff” we have no room for elsewhere in the home or with a mountain of clothes somewhere in the washing, drying and folding or put-away process.  If you would like to make-over your laundry room to make it more efficient and save space and time then the following tips and ideas are just for you!

In our laundry area we need to put everything needed to not only wash and care for our clothing but to do so all in one space.  Think of things like stain removal, storage, and minor repair. Pretty jars can collect loose change, things left in pockets, or popped buttons.  Using glass containers to hold your powder detergent not only puts it within easy reach but also helps you see when you are running low and need a re-stock.  A low shelf is a great place to put these items within your reach.

Shelving | Coin Laundry in Raleigh NC

Placing a couple of shelves near the dryer will help you keep your linens such as bath towels, kitchen towels, and sheets folded and out of the way until you put them away.  If you use wire shelving that is waterproof this is a great place to dry sweaters.  Reserve one shelf just for this task.  Baskets used on other shelves can hold a multitude of things.

Drying Racks

Mount a bath towel bar  on the underside of a laundry room shelf to make a really nice area fro your button down cotton shirts.  These items tend to shrink a bit in the dryer so removing them when damp and finishing with air dry helps with this problem.  They are then out of the way until you are ready to iron.

Wall Mounted Ironing Board

This is a real space saver for any laundry room.  This iron with board combos are easily installed to the wall of the laundry room and fold into their own cabinet when not in use.  They take up little wall space and require some carpentry skills to install but the payoff is a more streamlined look.  This keeps the room much more clutter free and easy to maintain.

Folding Areas

If you have both washer and dryers that are front loading machines then you have a perfect place to install a counter across the two and Viola you have a fantastic are for folding items as they come out of the dryer.  This is also handy for pre-treating and sorting of the laundry prior to wash.  Always have baskets or some type of containers ready for the transport to where laundry is to be stored.  This will help keep laundry from piling up into that mountain.

Prepare Your Closet and Wardrobe for Fall Part 3

After months of grueling hot extreme weather one morning it happens.  You detect a slight chilling in the air. A crisp feel and smell that signals the change of the season from hot to more enjoyable temps!  The leaves begin to change and we begin to get excited about cooler weather, football games, and a change in our wardrobe.  Boots, sweaters, and scarves can finally come back out.  But before we to excited it is also time to think about the care and storage of our current summertime wardrobe.

Prep Tips for Seasonal Closet Transitions | Laundry Service in Raleigh NC

Although it is probably the last thing we want to think about cleaning, storing, and properly putting away the clothing that we spent loads of time picking out and paying for must be done right.  Doing the job properly means next summer you will thank yourself for taking the time to do the job right.  Clothing prep for storage means that not only will your clothing emerge next Spring looking good and smelling great but you will make even better use of that newly organized closet space.  This is even more important since sweaters, jackets, and coats take up loads more room than our summer tanks, and shorts.  With that in mind we recommend you grab the storage containers of your choice, cedar or lavender sachets, maybe some dryer sheets and get ready for some great tips to help you with this task.

Wash and Dry

This is probably the most important task you must do before storing your clothes.  Check each item for a forgotten stain or spill.  Pre-treat and wash according to the manufacturers instructions.  This will prevent any mold or discoloration from happening during the long storage.  This will ensure the clothing looks as good as new when they emerge from the container.

Sort

Once the clothing has been properly washed, dried, and folded prepare your containers which should be fitted to the storage space you are using.  There are plenty of containers that fit nicely under the bed, and in extra closet space.  You will want to store them out of direct sunlight and areas that are not humid.  Both can cause fading and mold to grow which will potentially harm the fabric.  Always take the time to fold your items properly and as flat as possible to stop permanent  wrinkles from forming during the storage.

Garment Bags

For items that are a bit more special you will want to use a garment bag.  These bags usually hang and will keep dresses and other special items from wrinkling and getting dusty.  These are the items you would not want to fold and place in a box container.  Just be certain to dry clean any dresses or formal wear before you store them.

Extra Protection

There are many ways to ensure your clothing maintains a clean fresh smell and is protected from mustiness during the long storage period.  Cleaning the containers with a disinfectant and having some dryer sheets on hand will help you feel good about storage.  Placing a dryer sheet in between the layers of clothing will help with any mustiness and odors.  Some folks also like to put tissue paper between more delicate items. Lots of people like cedar sachets or even lavender ones.  These will keep any moths or insects at bay.

If you follow these great tips your clothes should emerge from their storage good as new.  Labeling each container is also a good idea so that if a vacation comes up you will know just where to look for those all important items.

Prepare Your Closet for Fall Part 2

The feel of a chill in the air herald’s the beginning of the fall season.  As the season changes it is certainly time to look to our closets and decide what needs to happen in order for us to flow seamlessly from one season to the next.  Although cooler temps are just around the corner, it does not mean it’s time to part with those cute summer dresses just yet.  Adding a light sweater or blazer can make a stylish seasonable outfit work well into the fall season.

Prep Your Closet for Fall! | Coin Laundry Raleigh NC

Many of us are much to quick to put away our summer skirts.  This year, try slipping on a pair of tights to add some warmth.  With all of the new hues available these days, creating an entirely new look is as easy as slipping on tights.

Transition with Layers

In addition, those tanks we all love and own in a variety of colors can also enhance our fall look. Use them as layers when temps drop! These type of tops do not add bulk under a long sleeved shirt, sweater or cardigan.  The sky is the limit on combinations!  The key here is to limit the layers.  As a rule no more than three layers will keep the outfit from overwhelming you.  You may begin to feel you have a whole new wardrobe simply by shopping a new look from your own closet.

Transition with Accessories

Our accessories can help in the season transition as well.  Scarves, jewelry, and purses can all add a new look to our ensemble.  The trends for this fall season show pastels extending into the season.  This means you can take advantage of all your summery colored accessories while beginning to add in your fall hues as well.

Shoes are another area that can be non-season specific.  Flats are always a great option for transitioning.  For many of you this will give a break to our feet by skipping the higher heels.  Flats come in a variety of shades from black, beige, blues, and tans.  This gives us many choices that can be worn year round.  These come as ballet flats and loafers and investing in these colors are a practical and sensible investment.

Keep in mind your work attire as you work to create your fall wardrobe.  These are the days when air-conditioners seem to work overtime and we are freezing one day but way to warm the next as the heat cranks up.  This is the perfect time to add in those cardigans or sweaters for layering as we adjust to the change in season.

As we move from sweltering hot days into the brisk cooler days of fall making sure we have cleaned out our closets and organized only those favorite pieces we love is the key to a smooth transition. Last time we offered some really great tips for cleaning out and organizing the closet.  We all find it easy to blow the budget for new things, but with a bit of re-purposing and some imagination we can create a great fall wardrobe that will work for us.

Prepare Your Closet And Wardrobe For Fall Part 1

The weather might be a little on the hot side still but now is a great time to begin preparing our closet for the transition from summer clothing to fall.  There is nothing fun about trying to pull an outfit together when our closet is full to overflow and we cannot bring new items in for lack of room.

Prep Your Closet | Raleigh Laundromat

Today, we are going to offer up some great tips for cleaning out your closet and getting it ready for the transition to fall wardrobe weather.  This can be a fun, stressful, and exciting time all rolled into one.

Get Motivated

First things first!  Find some really great music to keep you motivated.  This may be something serene, but more likely a huge dose of Beyonce may just be the ticket to get you in high gear.  Whatever it takes to get you moving will work.  Although the idea is daunting we recommend that you pull everything out of your closet and we mean EVERYTHING!  This is the best way to look at each piece of clothing and your many accessories and decide do I like this or “What was I thinking”?  This will likely take up a great deal of floor space but this is the only way to truly clean out and purge to make room for those items we really love and will actually wear.

Prioritize

As you go through your items you will want to prioritize.  This can be done by creating three piles, keep, donate, throw away.  For your keep pile put only the items you really love and will continue to wear.  In the donate pile place items you no longer want or need that might bless someone else.  Your throw away pile will have items that are torn, stained, or non-repairable.  Some items such as heavier coats, jackets, and sweaters may need stashed in another location.

Purge

One very good rule of thumb to follow is the “One Year Rule”.  If you have not worn it in at least one year it is very likely that you will not wear it again.  As you purge this rule should help you in making hard decisions.  If you have things with the tags still attached you must ask yourself why you have not worn this item even once and then decide if you will or if its time to bless someone else with it.

Another good tip for deciding what to keep and what to discard is to have a really good and trusted friend go through the process with you.  Having another opinion can help us make the tougher decisions sometimes.

Organize

Before beginning to put things back you will need to peruse your closet and assess how organized it is.  There are many great closet organizers available at container stores that will help you make the most out of the space you have.  After all if you simply pile it all back in the chaos will start over.  There are also some great shoe organizers, hangers, and pretty baskets for storage.

Once you have cleaned, organized, and purged we know you will feel great and truly be ready to begin the next phase of transition which will be to transition from spring/summer to fall wardrobe.

Why Use a Laundromat?

Laundry; that seemingly never endless task!  If you are like us, we are thankful to have a washer and dryer in our home that saves time when it comes to our day to day laundry needs.  However, there are those times when we find ourselves needing to launder some really large items such as our comforters, blankets, and other large bedding.  Speaking of bedding, how about Fido and the kitty?  Their pet beds are also a hard to fit in the washer/dryer item.

Why Use a Raleigh Laundromat?

Fortunately there are many Self serve, coin Raleigh laundromats around. There are also many laundry services available such as, Laundry Express, that can help you with your larger laundry needs.  Many of the self serve laundromats have super-sized front loading washers as well as double front load washers and high efficiency commercial sized dryers.

Wash Your Pet Beds!

Super sized front load machine are the perfect solution for any and all of your larger household items.  Many will fit not only your comforters, including down comforters, but also draperies and curtains.  Other items would include sleeping bags, bed spreads, curtains and YES even the dog or cat’s pet bed.

An added bonus you may not have even thought about is that your larger area rugs will usually fit nicely into these super sized machines.  Some laundromats offer steam cleaning for the largest area rugs that will not fit into the supersized machines.  This is an added bonus for an otherwise bulky heavy item.

Affordable

Pricing for these convenient options vary in price from $10.00 – $20.00 in most areas.  Bringing your own detergent and fabric softener will help keep the pricing down.   Here are some tip s to follow when planning a trip to the laundromat with your bulkier, larger items to ensure a good experience.

  • Check to see when the “Off Time” is to be sure your selected laundromat is not crowed and machines are available.
  • Make sure that you have the proper amount of coins needed.  Most places also have a credit card slot for your convenience but check ahead to be sure.
  •  Most laundromats offer 80 Lb, 50 Lb, and standard 20 Lb. size machine.
  • Try not to overload your machine to ensure your items are thoroughly cleaned.
  • Take your own laundry detergent and fabric softener to save some money.
  • Wash at the highest temperature you can safely use according to the manufacturers instructions.
  •  When drying your items follow the same manufacturers instructions but keep in mind that it may take longer to dry that you anticipate.  If the items feels dry at first it may be simply due to the heat of the dryer.  Later you may find after cooling that the item is still damp.  It is a good idea to add an extra drying cycle unless you want to end up hanging it to dry at home later.

Overall the luxury of being able to launder these bigger items will be well worth the reasonable prices most laundromats have.  A reputable, laundry keeps clean and functional machines and a bright cherry atmosphere for you to feel comfortable in.  This will help you keep even your largest items as clean as you want for your peace of mind.
