Expand Your Linen Storage

If you are like us, one of the hardest things to totally organize in the home is the linens. From bath towels to bed sheets these are all things we need room for but seldom have that space organized and streamlined.   It is oftentimes messy and there never seems to be enough space.  Today we are going to look at some ways we can create a more usable and less messy way to store all our linens.

Expand Your Storage! | Coin-Op Laundry Raleigh NC

First things first. In order to do this job right we must first define the space that will be used for our linen storage.  You may already have a linen closet of some sort but if not a dresser placed in a strategic place can fill the need perfectly.  Just be sure there are plenty of drawers!  Once you define the designated space take some time to decide what needs stored in this area.  Anything that does not belong needs to leave and find a new home!  Most of us have much more than we need taking up valuable space so give your linens a really good going through keeping just what you need.

Labeling | Coin-Op Laundry Raleigh NC

One of the easiest most practical ways to begin organizing your linen space is with ready made organizers.  Many big box stores carry all sorts of shelves, racks, dividers, and baskets which can be used in a variety of ways.  Labeling each container or shelf will help keep things in the right place in the future making all your hard work now pay off.  You can also use pops of color with your storage containers and baskets to brighten up the space making it more fun.

Another way to gain some storage space is to use a glass front cabinet or curio to store your blankets, sheets, and extra pillows.  If you have heirloom quilts this is a perfect way to show them off as well as a beautiful decorative feature of your room.  This will also give you more storage in your linen closet.

Other ways to keep your linens organized and manageable while keeping costs down would be to paint the doors or shelves in a pretty color and add some neat signs to identify where things go.  This way even the children can figure out how to put things away or find the things they need.  Also consider a bookcase that you might re-purpose for shelving and adding extendable rods for hanging larger linen items.  Door organizers can also help maximize your space.

In the bathroom an over the toilet cabinet will also provide a lot of space for extra toiletries such as paper products and extra towels and washcloths.  Shelves can be placed over the door  to provide unexpected space.  A nice cabinet in the bath will also help free up space in your linen closet.  If you do not have room for a cabinet simply add a few shelves above the toilet being careful to keep it simple and clean looking.

Using these tips can help you regain control of your everyday linens and help you to organize your home to function better for you and your family.  This can be done inexpensively with some thought and re-purposing of items you may already have in your home that are not functioning in a great way!  What you will gain is huge when you consider what you get back in time and energy.

How To Clean Your Dryer

When doing our normal day to day laundry chore cleaning our dryers may be the one thing we never think about doing…..that is until we hear about a dryer fire!  Keeping the dryer clean means it runs more efficiently but it also means it is never a fire hazard.  This is not a time consuming job, it only requires mere minutes!  The following are some really great tips for getting this job done.

How To Clean The Dryer | Laundry Services in Raleigh NC

  1. Begin by taking off all the stuff that you currently have on top of the dryer.  Once this is accomplished begin by wiping the dryer down from top to bottom.  This can take a bit of time if it has been awhile.  light lint tends to stick and you will want to use a dry cloth after a wet one to get it all off.  Next clean out your lint trap.  Toss all collected lint.
  2. Take a DRY cloth and wipe your lint trap and around the dryer vent.  You will want to have a garbage can nearby to put all the lint in.  Believe it or not the lint trap does not collect all of the lint coming from the dryer.  Over time the dryer collects lint around the drum and down into the vent hose.  This is where a fire hazard occurs.  It will also increase your drying time as it causes your dryer to not run efficiently.  Your first sign something is wrong is clothes that take way longer to dry.  Most hardware stores offer tools that attach to your vacuum cleaner and will run all the way through the vent hose to the outside to thoroughly clean out all that accumulated lint.  If you want to do a really in depth job, once very six months or so you can remove the top or front panel of your dryer and clean around the inside with a hose extension and get any lint that is hiding there.
  3. You will next need to use a damp cloth to wipe the inside parts of the drum checking for any stuck on lint.
  4. Before putting the lint trap back it is a good idea to give it a cleaning with some warm soapy water .  Rinse and replace.  Clean around the trap to remove any residue or buildup.
  5. Give the outside and back of the dryer a once over again and then you are ready to go.

Cleaning Routine | Laundry Service in Raleigh NC

Doing a thorough job can require 30 minutes every six months but a monthly quick clean will save you minutes and could save you a fire.  For most of us taking out the lint from the lint filter is cleaning the dryer.  To be safe a deep cleaning every six months is a must!  Hopefully these hints will help you develop a good routine for cleaning your dryer!

How To Clean Your Top Loading Washing Machine

Have you detected a not so nice smell in your home lately?  Can’t quite place where it originates from?  Well maybe you should follow your nose to your laundry room.  Give your top loading washer a really good smell. If it smells worse than your workout clothes or your families worst funky socks. then its time to give that washer a really good cleaning.  CLEAN the very machine that is used to clean your clothes?  Well in a word YES!  Believe it or not our washing machine get a bit dirty over time.

Cleaning Your Washing Machine | Raleigh Laundromat

Detergents, the soils on our laundry, and those hard water minerals build up in our washing machines over time.  They live in the areas of your machine that you cannot see and after a while they develop one more grungy smelling odor.  Not only do they live in hiding but I bet if you look closely you will find that mold and mildew are alive and well in the washing machine door and lid and are also causing quite a stink!

So how on earth do you clean and freshen up your top loading washing machine?  The following are some really great green-cleaning tips to help you clean and also keep clean your machine. These are eco-friendly tips that use no bleach that may later harm your fabrics.

Begin by setting your washing machine to its hottest water setting.  You will also want to set it to the highest water level also.  Next you will need to add four cups of white vinegar to the tub.  We do not recommend apple cider vinegar simply because of the smell.  The smell may linger and make your fabrics smell of it  many loads later.  Let the initial wash cycle start and then pause the cycle and allow the vinegar and water to sit at least an hour.

While this is sitting use this time to take a microfiber cloth you have wet with some hot vinegar water and wipe down the top of your washer.  The door and lid accumulate lots of excess dirt and sometimes mold and mildew that needs cleaned away.  An old toothbrush will be the perfect item to clean those fabric softener and bleach dispensers we use each time we launder our clothing.  Once you are done you may continue with the wash cycle.

When the washer is totally done you will next want to run a cycle but this time use a cup of baking soda in the water.  Once again using the hottest water temperature and highest water levels.  At the end of this wash cycle you will want to wipe the lid and around the top of your machine again to remove any grime and scum that accumulates again.

Cleaning Routine | Raleigh Laundromat

This cleaning of your top loader is recommended at least every six months, but once a month is the best option to keep it fresh smelling and to ensure that your laundry will always come out clean!  As with a front loading machine it is a good idea to leave the lid open after you are done with your laundry to allow the machine to dry out and thus eliminate any extra mold and mildew from having a chance to grow.  You should also take some time to wipe down the outside of your washer when done with cleaning the inside.  Next time we will talk about cleaning the dryer!

If you find yourself way behind on your laundry chores and would like some help catching up, stop by our Raleigh laundromat!  We offer many different services including a wash, dry, fold! We also offer dry cleaning and much more!

How To Clean Your Front Loading Washing Machine

For quite some time now Front Loading washing machines have been the top choice in washers.  They are really energy efficient and use much less detergent than their top loading predecessors.  Unfortunately they have a tendency to produce mold and that produces unpleasant smells.  It is easy however to keep your front loader fresh and ensure your clothes get cleaner also simply by giving your washer a cleaning once a month or so.  This can be done quickly and using several methods including bleach, but the following is an eco-friendly way that costs very little to make and does not include bleach.  You will more than likely have many of the ingredients on hand.

Ingredients | Coin Laundry Raleigh NC

  • 1/4 cup of Water
  • 2 Cups of White Vinegar
  • 1/4 cup of Baking Soda
  • Scrub Sponge

Begin by mixing the baking soda and water together in a small bowl.  This will be used as the detergent for cleaning the machine.pour the vinegar into a cup and head to the laundry room.  You may then add the baking soda mixture into the detergent container on your particular machine.  The same place where you pour your detergent.  Then you can just pour the vinegar into the drum of the machine.  Next you will set your washers controls to normal load and put the water temperature on its hottest setting.  Close the door and start up your washing machine.  The wash cycle will do most of the hard dirty work for you.

As the machine does its work the baking soda and vinegar will mix together to naturally break up the mineral deposits your machine makes as many loads of clothing are run through during the month.  They will also remove any mold that is growing and will freshen and clean the machine.  Once the washer is done use the scrub sponge to clean around the opening of your washing machine. Use more baking soda and water as needed to remove any stubborn mold and residue that accumulates there.

Then rinse with fresh water to complete the job.  A great tip for front loading machines is to leave the door ajar slightly after running and removing a load of clothing.  Especially in earlier models.  The front gasket on these models sometimes catch water and mold and mildew easily grow in the standing water.  You can also scrub down the seal with the same detergent mixture and rinse.  It is a good idea to use a towel to dry out any excess water at least once a week.

Your washing machine is now really clean and sparkling like new!  You are now ready to tackle all those loads of clothes and have no worries about any grime or molds and mildews finding their way onto your clothes.  Giving your front loading machine a good cleaning about once a month or so will ensure that your clothes and your laundry room will stay fresh smelling .  It will also serve to keep your machine in tip-top shape.  Take a moment to clean your dryer too.  Watch for a blog topic on how to’s coming soon!

Organizing The Laundry Room Part 2

We are into the beautiful fall season and it is a myth that most of us only do “spring” cleaning.  Lots of us do a “fall” cleaning also to get us ready for the winter season and holiday period that will be upon us very shortly.  Last blog we talked a bit about getting our laundry room or areas more organized.  Laundry is a huge part of our home chores and takes up loads of our time, no pun intended!  This is an often neglected area of our homes and can easily be organized to save us time, energy, and money.  The following are some tips and ways to set up your laundry room or area to make the most of the space you have.

Tight Space Laundry | Raleigh Laundromat

In many home the laundry area is very limited to a small bathroom area, closet off the kitchen, or a mudroom area.  This means you are limited in your space so we must be very creative here.  Stackable washers and dryers are the obvious choice to maximize and economize your limited space.  If possible find a set that has a pull out shelf between the units for folding items as they come out of the dryer and then can slide back in to be out of sight. A variety of ways to camouflage the laundry area are available such as louvered doors painted a pretty color, curtains in a great pattern, or even shade that go top to floor.

Larger Area

If you are lucky enough to have a larger space for your laundry needs then their are lots of things you can do to make the room as organized as possible.  There are all sorts of ideas for containing your laundry and cleaning supplies.  Cabinetry will allow for storage needs very adequetly as this is a common source of frustration in most laundry areas.  Shelving inside will help corral supplies into one area. Having a shelving unit of some kind outside the cabinets will also help with folding dried laundry as well. A rod of some sort will help with hanging needs and a retractable clothes line will help with all your drying needs.

Everything In Its Place

Laundry space that has loads of storage options will not only function well but will be a place you won’t mind working in as you do the laundry. There are so many storage solutions available on the marketplace today.  One of the best ways to begin organizing is in the containers where your dirty laundry is.  Presorting is easy when you have the proper containers.  One each for whites, dark’s, and delicate’s makes Carry and Wash easier than you can imagine.  When the basket is full it’s time to wash.  This works even better if you make the family responsible for carrying their basket to the laundry room and picking up when done.

Create space in the room to store your winter wear out of the normal coat closet.  If you have the room this is a great organizing idea for the entire family.  This way instead of all over the house, you can find your hats, gloves, and scarves all in one place.  You may also find it helpful to create a Pet Space for those needs our pets have.  The laundry area is a great place for those supplies also.

Decorate

Making sure this space is as clutter free as you can possibly make it will mean you won’t mind showing it off.  Use shelves and open spaces for your collectibles and lighting to highlight will make this space very open and inviting for everyone.
