Stain Removal Guide: Tar

It always happens!  Just when you don’t need the extra stress of a hard to solve laundry problem someone in the family gets into a bit of a sticky, gooey, mess.  Never fear!  There are a few tips to help you remove these messes from your clothing or upholstery.

Tar Stain Removal Tips | Raleigh Laundromat

Things you will need before tackling the problem:

  • Dull knife
  • Plenty of Ice Cubes
  • A Lubricant (choose)  Goo Gone, WD 40, Vegetable Oil, Peanut Butter, Lard
  • Laundry Detergent
  • cloths (soft)

Tar Removal | Raleigh Laundromat

  1. If the are affected is a large one it is suggested that you try and scrape away all the tar you can first.  You can harden the tar using the ice and then use your dull knife to scrape.  Loosen and remove all you can before proceeding with step 2.
  2. There will be a residue in the fabric after the tar is removed.  This is where your lubricant comes into use.  Put your soft cloth underneath the area that is stained to help absorb the excess lubricant.
  3. Using your chosen lubricant, blot it onto the area with the residue making sure that you wet the stain completely.
  4. Gently rub the area with another cloth.  You can also simply blot using pressure making sure to work as much lubricant in the stained area as possible.
  5. Once you have saturated the stain leave it to set for a bit before you wash the item.
  6. Wash the item as you normally would, however do not dry the clothing until you are certain the stain is removed.  If there is any tar still on your item of clothing the heat of the dryer will melt it and it will then adhere to the walls of your dryer.  You will then have tar on any other pieces of clothing you dry creating a huge mess for you and ruining more items!
  7. If you cannot remove all of the tar and residue, have it cleaned professionally.

Removing the tar from upholstery is much the same.  Keep in mind that wet tar is easier to remove than dried stains.   Dried can still be removed but will require much more time and energy.

  1. As with clothing remove all of the tar you can by scraping with a plastic utensil.  Be very careful as the fabric of upholstery is different and you can harm it easily!
  2. Using a cotton ball moistened with water only, moisten the area.
  3. Using clean cotton balls use the lubricant and wet the stain thoroughly with the lubricant.
  4. Allow it to penetrate for a few minutes. and then use a clean cotton ball to blot.  Tar should begin to come off.
  5. Continue the above steps until all of the tar is off.
  6. When all is removed clean the area to remove any of the residue with a mild soap or upholstery cleaner.
  7. Let the area dry.

A few extra tips are to be sure you test a hidden area to be sure your lubricant of choice will not harm the fabric.  Also peanut butter can be a great choice as it is an all natural product and its oil has been a useful product in the removal of tar from both clothing and upholstery.  Simply apply, let it sit, and then remove and wash.

How To Clean Winter Clothing Part 3

Welcome back!  Ready to learn more about laundering your winter clothing? By following a few helpful laundering tips you can preserve the appearance of your favorite items for many seasons to come.

Winter Clothes Cleaning Tips | Raleigh Laundromat

This time of year we pull out our wool, velvet, and tweed skirts and pants.  These fabrics require special care.  You will not want to just throw them in with all your other laundry.  It is recommended by most manufacturers that these items be dry cleaned regularly but as we all know this can get pretty pricey!  The key is to take really good care to not get these items really dirty or at the least prevent stains as much as possible. There are a few dry cleaning methods on the market today that may help you do a cleaning yourself in between professional dry cleaning.  If you are lucky enough to have one of the newer steam cleaning washers or dryers this may also help.  Just use a lot of care no matter which method you use.

One of the best warm weather items we have this time of year is our sweaters.  We all have our favorites. You will certainly want to launder these items with care so that they last a really long time.  It is recommended these be washed after two to five wears.  If you have some made of silk, cashmere or cotton you will want to launder these after two to three wears.

  • Launder with cold water and a really mild detergent.  If you are worried about the fabric then by all means a hand washing is a great way to ensure the best care of the fabric.
  • Always air dry thoroughly.
  • Store your sweaters by folding gently and laying flat.  Hanging can cause stretching  of the fibers and affect the appearance of the sweater.

How To Clean Winter Clothing Part 2

Winter Laundry Tips | Laundry Raleigh NC

The weather outside is about to get frightful!  That does not mean your winter clothing must look that way.  This blog we are going to address those great layering and regular articles of clothing you will be wearing to keep you toasty and warm all through the winter season.  By following a few helpful laundering tips you can preserve the appearance of your favorite items for many seasons to come.

A really popular item in recent years is tights.  Tights are a girls best friend when it comes to transitioning certain items of clothing from Fall to Winter and can extend out clothing “season” for a few months.  To take care of them properly:

  • Hand Wash after every wear.
  • Air Dry
  • To freshen you can place them in the dryer briefly with a dryer sheet but only for a short time.
  • When storing them be sure to prevent snags by keeping them separate from other items in your drawer.

Next up is that item we girls really love this time of year….Our Leggings and Lounging or Yoga Pants. These should be laundered after one to three wears.  If  using them for exercise you will definitely want to wash after each use:

  • Turn them inside out to prevent any fading or pilling.
  • Wash in cold water with a mild detergent.
  • You may want to Air Dry to prevent any shrinkage and to help the fabric retain its shape.  If not, dry on a low setting with like fabrics.

How To Clean Winter Clothing Part 1

You only have to be out of doors briefly most days to know that the weather is changing rapidly.  We are moving into the much cooler days followed by briskly cold nights.  It’s time to get out the layering pieces to our wardrobes and start adding warmth to our mornings and evenings.  If you are attending a football game you know you will need a coat, mittens, and a hat to help keep your body temperature up in the warm range.  With this need for heavier clothing comes different ways to launder your cold weather gear.  Over the next three blogs we are going to look at how to best take care of those winter staples we depend on to not only keep us warm but also to look good doing it!

Washing Winter Clothing | Coin-Op Laundry Raleigh NC

One of the hardest items to care for are our parkas and and any other down-filled items.  It is recommended that you wash these items at least twice a season but how you do that is very important.  If these items are washed to often the down feathers can break and ruin the appearance of the item.  The two times a season method will alleviate this problem and keep your parka looking good.  Follow these tips for washing:

  • Machine wash in cool to cold water.
  • Use a non-detergent agent to clean.  Regular detergents can flatten your down feathers as can dry-cleaning.
  • Once washed take three or four tennis balls that are clean and place them in the dryer along with your down item and tumble dry on a low setting.  The tennis balls will help to redistribute the down feathers in the item.
  • Make sure that your item dries thoroughly so that the down does not clump together.  This can take a while so just keep checking it.

The next item we wear a lot are our fleece jackets and sweatshirts.  We love everything fleece for their warmth and softness.  They also require care if you want them to remain looking good throughout the season.  Wash them as follows:

  • Turn inside out and be sure to wash with like colors .  No Towels so you get no lint.
  • They should be rinsed no less than twice to get rid of all detergent.
  • Air Dry to retain any water resistance the item has been treated with.

Doing it right means your fleece will stay smooth and soft all winter long.

We all love our accessories.  Gloves, Hats, and Scarves are not only necessary for warmth but we LOVE to use them to make a statement in the colder months.  Care must be taken to keep them looking fantastic.  These items should be washed a minimum of three to five times the entire season.  Keep in mind that as we wear these items we put them in contact with oils from our face, the makeup we wear, and perfumes.  Gross but true we pickup loads of germs with those pretty gloves we are wearing to keep our hands toasty warm.

  • Hand Wash all items that are knit and air dry thoroughly.
  • Leather items are dry clean only along with any structured hats.
  • Be sure not to store your gloves in a coat pocket if they are at all damp.  Even perspiration….They can smell from the mildew that builds up over time.  Leave them out to air dry after you wear them.

Following these great tips for your outerwear will ensure your warm clothing looks good all winter long.  Visit back soon for more tips!

More Things To Do With Dryer Lint

Things to do With Lint! | Coin Laundry Raleigh NC

  • Dryer lint can also be added to your composting pile, however, you will want to be sure you are using a chemical free laundry detergent and fabric softeners.  If not doing this too often will add unwanted chemicals into your compost pile and this is not something you want.
  • If your children have small pets such as hamsters or guinea pigs you can use the dryer lint in their cages for nesting and bedding.  Be sure you are not using any kind of heater in the cage as this material is highly flammable.  If you have larger animals you can use it to stuff a bed for them.  Take an old blanket or something similar and fold in half.  You will want to sew around the edges leaving a small opening where you will add the lint.  When it is full you will then sew the opening shut.
  • Dryer lint is great for cleaning up messy spills such as oil or other liquids in the garage or on the driveway.  It can be used to make paper and added to other things to make clay.  Use it to pack fragile things for mailing.

Can you believe there are this many different things you can do with lint?! For more things to do with lint, visit back with our previous post, as well!
