How To Wash Towels

One of those much needed items we use everyday but never really think about unless its missing when we get out of the shower is bath towels.  Bath towels are that fresh pop of color in our bathrooms that also do double duty by drying us off after bathing. We use them to dry our hair and to mop up water or spills.  Many times we even use them when bathing our pet children.  When we first purchase them they are so soft and absorbent.

However, after a while you will begin to notice they are not quite as soft and certainly not as absorbent.  They can actually begin to be pretty rough feeling. Before you decide to use them as rags for cleaning, we can offer you some really great tips on how to make them almost as good as new.  The following are some great ideas for laundering your towels, hand towels, and washcloths to make them usable again.

First off believe it or not the amount of laundry detergent can be the biggest problem in washing towels.  You are more than likely using too much!  Yes, you read that right, too much detergent and probably way to much fabric softener.  Most of us have this idea that if we want things really clean we need a lot of detergent.

The truth of the matter is that in this case “more is simply not better”.  Over  a period of time towels and other things like our washcloths and hand towels will accumulate soap residue that gets into the fabric fibers of our towels.  When this happens they cannot absorb water as well as they did at first.  Another problem is that they won’t dry as fast as they once did either.  When towels don’t dry completely they can get a really bad smell. What you will need to do when this happens is to strip them.  This is a simple process and you can do it easily and in a couple of washes.

Place your towels and other bath linens into the washer.  Use the hottest water setting you can.  Do NOT add any laundry detergent or liquid fabric softeners.  Add one cup of vinegar to this first run through.  Once this cycle is finished set the cycle again using hot water but this time add half a cup of baking soda.  Run the laundry through another cycle.  This process will strip all of the accumulated detergent and fabric softeners from the material and they will be good as new again.

You will also want to wash and dry new towels to remove the silicone and other things used to finish fabric before you use them.  This will ensure that the maximum absorbency is reached before use.  Be certain to wash your towels using warm water and color safe bleaches regularly.  Always try to remember to give them a good shake before placing the wet towel into the dryer.  This will help to fluff up the terry loops and will make sure you get full absorbency.

We hope this will help you get as much use out of your bath towels.  They are an investment and you want to be able to use them a long time.

Final Summer Laundry Tips | Laundry Service Raleigh NC

One of the best summer time pleasures is spending a beautiful day at the beach.  The problem is that no matter how hard we try we end up with sand all over us and our belongings at the end of the day.  To try and combat this problem keep your clothes in a separate sealed up bag once you take them off.  This can help keep them from not only getting wet but keep the sand off them.  If you find they have sand on them at the end of the day you will need to do some damage control before you launder.  Take your clothes, bathing suits, and towels outside for a complete drying.

Do NOT put them into the washer or dryer before you take this step.  Doing so will ensure that you will find sand in ALL of your clothes even if they were not with you at the beach.  Once they have dried outside completely then you will want to shake, shake, shake them to remove any sand still attached.  If you find it is still hard to remove you can wet them down with a garden hose and allow to dry again.  Once all of the sand is removed you can launder as usual.

Another summertime activity we love but that is really hard on our clothing is swimming in the pool.  The chlorine, natural body oils and sunscreens we use combine together and will begin to break down the fabric and elastic in your swim wear.  To help combat this problem you will need to develop a habit of taking off your swimwear and rinsing it immediately in some cold water thoroughly.  Once you have rinsed it really well you will want to lay it flat to dry.  If you use a dryer or wring it out you will damage your swim suit.

We all love a good cookout in the summer months but the food stains that can come with all that great food can cause problems.  BBQ sauce, juice stains, and fresh berries are just a few of the stain we can encounter this time of year.  To help save your clothes you will want to act quickly.  As soon as you notice the stain begin to treat.  There are a variety of portable wipes and stain sticks available so keep a supply in your purse.  If this is not an option you can also use a paper towel on the spot and use water to flush the spot.  Make sure you use cold water only.  Flush the stain from the back.  Hopefully this will transfer most of the stain to the paper towel.  As soon as possible treat the spot and launder as usual.

We hope this series of tips helps you keep your clothing looking good all through the summer months.

Summer Laundry Tips Part Two

We all love summer!  With many more outdoor activities, family gatherings, and many entertainment type fun, why not!   One thing is for certain, we would much rather be enjoying those fun things than be stuck doing indoor chores.  This blog post will continue with more great laundry tips to keep your summer clothing looking good and save you some time so you can get back outside enjoying the sun!

One of our best tips is to simply your laundry routine as much as possible.  Teach your family to sort their own laundry and point out any stains that need to be addressed before washing. Assign each family member their own day for individual laundry and make it a routine. Establish what needs to be done by them and how much help they can expect from you.  Keep in mind that as parents we cannot expect perfectionism.  This is the hardest part of allowing our children to learn and grow.  No their clothes may not be folded exactly the way you would do it. They may sport a few more wrinkles at times than you would like but you are teaching them a valuable life skill and getting some much needed help with laundry chores.

Remember that summertime laundry is not full of the heavier bulky items that winter time is but even though it is lighter it tends to be dirtier.  There is the temptation to let it go and get out of a good routine.  Try not to fall into that temptation.  Because it is dirtier and more smelly you need to do laundry on schedule.  Leaving it to long will make it harder to remove stains and ground in dirt.  The smells will also be harder to get rid of.  Teach the entire household how to pre-treat stains using either a commercial pre-treatment or one you make yourself.

Getting the laundry done during the week will free up your weekends for fun stuff!  This should be incentive enough to get a routine in place.  Multitasking helps get things done without being boring.  Throwing in laundry to wash while cooking dinner or helping kids with homework breaks up the boredom.  Enlisting your kids to help fold laundry while watching favorite TV programs is also a great plan.  They can put laundry away during the commercial breaks.  Make it FUN!

One of the very best ways to enjoy the gorgeous sunshine this time of year is to dry your laundry outside in it as much as possible.  There is nothing like the fresh clean smell the sun gives our bedding and linens.  One of the best things is that it also can help with the stains.  It will help bleach out some of those stains naturally.  If you have a smelly laundry problem this is also a great way to deodorize them with nature. Give it a try and we think you will LOVE it!

Summer Laundry Tips Part One

Summertime!  Let’s face it, we all love this time of year.  Outdoor activities like swimming, ballgames, bike riding, and cookouts are some of the best times we have all year long. However, along with all that increased outdoor activity comes more laundry and a few more laundry headaches.  After all who wants to be stuck inside doing chores like laundry when its so beautiful and sunny outside?

Summer Laundry Tips | Laundromat in Raleigh NC

This blog post is going to offer up some summer time laundry tips to help you get a handle on the laundry and get you out and enjoying this amazing weather with your family.

One of the biggest problems with summertime laundry is the smell.  Literally stinky clothing!  The problem here is that along with those really fun and exciting ballgames comes sweat.  Sweaty people create a bit of stinky laundry.  Once those clothes lay in a hamper for a little while that smell will intensify and you will begin to notice.  To get a handle on this problem you may need to keep your washer empty and have the family learn to put all sweaty laundry directly into the washer.  This means as soon as they take it off.  If they forget, no problem.  A simple mix of baking soda, water, and white vinegar can be applied to the stains, such as underarms, and then soaked in some salt water.  Launder as usual and they will smell good as new!

Along with the sweat come another laundry problem, deodorant.  Deodorant is a great and necessary thing because let’s face it summer is sweaty!  The problem is that deodorants and antiperspirants can stain your clothing creating a big problem.  To help solve this issue you will want to make a mixture using dish detergent, a small amount of water, and some white vinegar.  Once you have this mixed up use a cloth and press this mixture into the stain.  Saturate the stain, then rinse with some water. Launder as usual.

One of the most common summertime stains is grass stains.  Those ballgames, outdoor picnics, concerts, and party’s will inevitably create grass stains on the clothing.  These are a bit harder to get out but with patience you can.  First make sure to have a oxygen type cleaner on hand in your laundry room.  Use this mixture to create a pre-soak for your stained clothing. Once you have pre-soaked the articles wash as usual with your detergent.  It is very important to check the clothing to ensure the stains are gone BEFORE you dry them.  If the stain is still there you can blot it with a little alcohol, rinse, and then rewash the clothing.

If your children are avid ballplayers then their laundry will also have ground in dirt stains to contend with.  Pre-treating these type stains immediately is the key to getting them cleaner. This can be done also with an oxygen type cleaner as stated above or using a really good pre-treater and even a good laundry detergent will work.  pre-soaking is also key for these types of stains.  If this is a ball uniform check the label to see if the article can be bleached.  Again, the sooner the clothing is pre-treated and washed the easier it will be to remove the stains.

Using these tips will ensure that your summer gets off to a great start.   We are all busy this time of year and laundry is one area where we can implement some good stain removing strategies to help get the whole family back outside enjoying the season.

Unique Laundry Tips Part Two

fluff and fold Raleigh NCEveryday most of us deal with all sorts of laundry issues.  This blog post will continue the unique tips we have gathered to hopefully help you deal with your laundry more efficiently.

More Unique Laundry Tips | Fluff and Fold Raleigh NC

The first tip is for those times, and it happens to all of us, that we forget to boot the laundry from the washer to the dryer.  Yuck!  It is really annoying.  The good news is it is a fixable problem however. The biggest issue here is the mildew that begins to form on your clothing.  Re-washing as soon as you discover this mishap is crucial.

To rid the clothing of the smell you will want to wash it with a cup of plain white vinegar.  This will kill the mildew and help eliminate the smell.  Wash on the hottest setting the clothing fabric can handle. Wash a second time with regular detergent and a cup of baking soda and then dry as usual.

Another tip is for separating the clothes.  Towels consist of terry cloth material which can be really abrasive to other materials.  It is not a good idea to wash them with your regular clothing.  Doing so can cause your clothes to “pill”  and we all hate those tiny little balls.  Just wash towels separate from your other items of clothes and they will be fine.

Your washing machine can also get a bit stinky.  You certainly do not want this to transfer to your clothes.  To clean it and remove the smell you can purchase a commercial product to clean your machine.  The smell is more than likely coming from mildew lurking somewhere in the washer.

Pour in  a cup of white vinegar and run the hottest water temperature setting possible.  Once the cycle is done you can pour in a cup of baking soda in and run another cycle.  Once this is done make sure you are using the proper amounts of detergent and softener.  A really good tip is to make sure the washer is dry in between uses by leaving the lid ajar so mildew does not grow.

Stain removal is another area of laundry you will want to stay up on by pre-treating. Be sure that you don’t dry a garment with a stain. This will set the stain, perhaps permanently, so be sure to check.

When it comes to drying the clothes use flat sweater dryers for drying your fragile items.  Hangers will cause stretching.  Using dryer balls instead of dryer sheets are also a good alternative.  They leave your clothes soft and fluffy without chemicals.  Remember to remove clothes promptly to keep wrinkles from forming.  When air drying you can also use a salad spinner to remove excess water and your drying time will be cut in half.

Taking the time to turn the clothes the right way and check the pockets before washing will help prevent fading and keep stray Kleenex and paper from making a mess in the washer or dryer.
