Laundry Tips for Men

coin laundry Raleigh NCWhen it comes to doing the laundry both women and men want to get the chore done and over with.  Men are notorious however for waiting until nothing in the hamper smells decent and clean.  This is one household chore that needs to be done regularly and in the right way.  Believe it or not this will save you loads of money over time because your clothing will stay better looking and in the end will last longer.

Let’s talk about some things that men should but probably don’t know about doing their laundry.  We are sure once you understand the mechanics of laundry better you won’t be waiting until a date wants to come over to address the mountain of laundry you have stashed all over the place. Whether they take advantage of coin laundry in Raleigh NC or do the wash at home, the following tips will help.

Laundring Tips for Men! | Coin Laundry Raleigh NC

You could get some great advice from your Mom, Sister, Aunt, or  any adult female in the family.  If you have female friends who seem to have it all together you might ask for a bit of instruction from them.  If not then follow these tried and true tips for getting a handle on the laundry.

First things first.  You will need to gather the things you need to do the laundry.  This means picking a good detergent and other products needed.  There are loads of brands out there and it can seem overwhelming.  If you want to use one that is environmentally safe and contains few chemicals then a biodegradable kind is for you.  Many stores carry these now.  If you just want to get the clothes clean then pick one that is color safe and works with your washing machine.  These days HE washers require a comparable detergent but those are identified on the product.  Don’t stress to much.  Once you find the detergent you will know what to get next time.  Same thing for fabric softeners.  Either buy a bottle of liquid or use dryer sheets.  Same product used a different way.  For ease of use most prefer dryer sheets.  Throw it in with the clothes and done!

If you have a lot of whites such as underwear then you will also want to get some bleach.  Just use caution when adding bleach not to splash it on any of your colored clothes.  Lucky for you they now have a splash-less type. Look for it on the bottle label.

Now you are ready to sort your clothes.  Check your tags if you are not certain how an item should be washed and dried.  Sort your clothes into colored, whites, delicate.  Pay attention to the label!  If you wash an item with wool in it and then dry it it will shrink to a tiny tiny size.  If you are in doubt you can take the item to the cleaners.  Suits also need to go to the cleaner.  If you wear dress shirts you can have these cleaned and pressed for a minimal amount of money. Be certain to put all whites in one load.  If you get a color such as red mixed in then all your whites will come out pink!

Water temperature is really important.  If you are washing socks and bed sheets then hot water will be okay.  Cold water is best used to wash colors. Warm water will work for your lighter clothing but darks should be washed in only cold water to prevent fading.  Once you master the wash then just remember to dry partial loads in the dryer.  Overfilling either machine is not a good idea.

Get Your Home Ready for Fall Part Two

How many of us think about doing a great Fall cleaning of our homes?  Did you know that its a wonderful time to get our home ready for winter and the upcoming holidays?  In the fall the cooler temperatures really help with all the outside and indoor chores we need to get done.  So take advantage of that great weather and use our tips for getting a good fall clean on!

Fall Cleaning Tips | Coin-Op Laundry Raleigh NC

  • Always make sure you clean from the top of a room to the bottom:  Start at the ceiling and wipe away cobwebs and dust down the wall to the baseboards.  Our homes get more dusty during the summer months so its time for it to go.  Once done then vacuum all the floors and any of your curtains that can’t be washed and launder those that can.
  • Next turn your attention to winterizing your bedroom:  First strip your bed of all its linens.  If its time to flip the mattress this is the time to do it. While you are doing this have your quilts and blankets laundered and ready to go.  Place them on the bed and it will be fresh and ready for the fall chill and winter cold.
  • Now is the time to organize your closets:  This means removing the summer tanks and shorts and getting everyone’s wardrobe ready for Fall/Winter.  It is also a good time to donate any items that no longer fit or that will be outgrown by children over the next 7-8 months.  If you find stained and irreparable items toss them.  Do the same with all of your shoes.  Switch  sandals for boots!
  • Take a morning and wash all your windows:  This needs to be done inside and out and doing them in the cold of the winter will be no fun!  If you need to break it up then do a room at a time over a period of a week or so. Wash all of your window screens as well.  If you use storm windows then wash those and put them in as well.
  • Fall is the absolute best time to give your kitchen a deep deep clean:  We all know that those holidays are coming quickly now.  Use the top to bottom method here as well.  This is a great time to deep clean all of your appliances as well.  Clean that oven on a day you can fling open the windows to reduce the smell.  Clean out that refrigerator and freezer. Remove any food that is beyond expiration and then give both a good cleaning.  Run a dishwasher cleaner through it to get it super clean as well.  Then turn your attention to your cabinets and pantry.  Organize and remove any unwanted or expired foods.  This is a good time to designate a spot or cabinet for all your baking items.  Make a list as you go for those things you will need during the holidays.  This will allow you to shop during the sales for your needed things.
  • Use environmentally safe cleaners:  In today’s market many of the cleaners we need are formulated for allergy free cleaning.  You can also make your own safe cleaners.  Winter is the worst time of year for polluted air in our homes.  We open the windows and doors less allowing for a much polluted air environment.  Read the labels on all your cleaners.  VOC-free or Low VOC cleaners are what you want to look for.

Most of us do a good spring cleaning of our homes but fall is a great time to to a really good deep cleaning to put away the summer and get us ready for the holiday events and winter burrowing we will soon be in.  Today’s blog post will offer up some ways to get started on the readying up of your home in the fall.

Let’s look at the outside of our home first.  The following are some things to do to prepare for the Fall/Winter season:

  • Take a good look at your homes exterior.  Look for places that might need a little paint.  Decks, trim, porch railings, etc.
  • This is the the perfect time to clean up and store your summer patio furniture and all the summer stuff you won’t need in the coming months.
  • Look at your windows and doors.  Caulking around these will help with your energy bills and keep your home comfortable in the colder months.
  • Wash all those windows.
  • Inspect your exterior doors and check the weather stripping.  another energy saving tip!
  • While looking at these doors check them for damage including your garage doors.
  • A really important tip is to make certain you drain and then store your garden hoses.  This will help ensure they do not freeze.  You can also install insulating covers on your outdoor spigots.
  • This is the time of year to get those chimneys and flues checked and cleaned before using them this winter.
  • Check on all of your gutters and downspouts and clean if necessary.

For inside your home we offer some really great suggestions to get your home ready for Fall/Winter:

  • Take some time to really focus on the rooms you will use most.  The family/living room, entryway, and your guest bathroom will be most seen by your guests.  Spending some time deep cleaning them now will help down the road.
  • Always clean a room from top down.  Start with those cobwebs that have accumulated near the ceilings and down the walls.  Then you can concentrate on the windows and window sills.  This is the time to get those baseboards and corners really well.
  • If you have carpets that you want cleaned this is a good time to do this also.  Schedule a cleaning with a carpet specialist.
  • In the kitchen you can organize and get it holiday ready now!  Clean out those cabinets and pantry.  Make room for the necessities you will need during Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Put those baking pans and supplies where you can get to them easily.  Make a list of all the things you will need and get a head start on that holiday shopping.
  • The bedrooms and guest rooms are the place to turn mattresses and get the dust bunnies from under the bed.

More Ways To Clean Comforters and Quilts

laundry serivce raleigh ncWelcome back. We are here to talk more about washing comforters and quilts. If you need help with this even after the tips below, our laundry service in Raleigh NC is ready for you!

Comforters and Quilts | Laundry Service Raleigh NC

If you have heirloom quilts or fragile quilts you will certainly want to take really good care with them.  These need to be hand washed and line dried.  Using a washing machine is much to harsh for these items and driers will harm them as well.  To hand wash you can use your bathtub or a really deep laundry sink/tub. You will need to be certain to dissolve the detergent really well BEFORE you add the quilt.  Soak for about ten minutes and gently swish it around before then rinsing well.  Squeeze as much water out as possible before line drying.

If you have any down-filled comforters or quilts they will need some special attention as well.  Many can be washed safely in your home washer if they fit.  If it is an older one however it may be to fragile and need to be professionally cleaned.  You can do a colorfast test to make certain it is safe to launder them.If they are in good condition you can more than likely machine wash and dry them.  Always make certain to use cold water and as gentle a detergent as you have.  If they are more on the fragile side then hand wash them in the bathtub or a deep laundry sink.  To dry them on a clothesline you want to drape them and reposition them several times until dry.  If you can dry them in a dryer a really neat tip is to put a pair of clean tennis shoes in with the bulky item to help fluff up the down as the item dries.  A couple of tennis balls will work as well.

Always make certain to dry any of these larger items on a low heat or use the air dry setting which uses no heat.  It will take longer to dry these items and you will want to check on them periodically until they are totally dry.

No matter how you proceed you must understand that our larger, bulkier, sometimes delicate quilts and comforters need much more attention than our regular laundry.  Thank goodness they are not part of our weekly laundry routine!  Remember to check them regularly for stains and dirt and spot clean them as often as needed.  This will help cut down on the times you will need to deal with them.

Here at Laundry Express we have the best laundry service in Raleigh NC and state of the art laundromat facility. These machines will help get those large quilts and comforters clean.  We can also help you with those more delicate items to help you preserve them for as long as possible.  Come by and check out our facility today!

Time Saving Laundry Tips

In our crazy busy lives sometimes the chores seem to pile up faster than we would like. After a week of long work hours and then extra curricular activities and sports events for the kiddos the last thing we want to think about is laundry!  The weekend should be for fun things right?  Well today’s blog post is going to offer you some tips to save time on your dreaded laundry chore and get your family out the door having fun. If you need help, visit our Raleigh laundromat!

Time Saving Tips | Raleigh Laundromat

One of the first things to help you get laundry started faster is to realize that the laundry rules you may have grown up with no longer apply today.  Our Mother’s and Grandmother’s had laundry machines that required a certain order such as water first, then soap, and only then add the clothes.  Fortunately today’s washing machine as as simple as ever to use.  The detergent formulated for use today are so much easier to use.

Today we can dump in the clothes, choose your settings, place the detergent in the dispenser, and start the washer.  Your desired water temperature will automatically adjust and begin to fill the machine.  The one thing you will want to remember is pay attention to your detergent when you purchase it.  Many of today’s machines call for high-efficiency detergent.  Front-loaders especially need this type of detergent.  It is marked on the container if it is specially formulated to be high-efficiency.

You will also want to pay attention to how much you need to use per load.  We are wired for some reason to think along the lines of “more is better”.  Our thoughts are if a half a detergent cap is called for then a full cap is better, Right?  Well actually, No!  When we use too much detergent it does not rinse well from our clothing.  This in turn can cause all kinds of problems that include skin irritation.  It can also cause extra work for you by your having to either rinse the clothing a couple of extra times to remove the detergent or having to totally rewash the load again.  Less is better.

Two tablespoons to a quarter cup is all you need for a lightly soiled load of clothing.  Using too much can cause your clothing to have a dingy look which defeats the purpose of washing.  A good rule of thumb is to begin with a lessor amount and increase the amount as you see the need.

When you get a stain on your clothing contrary to your instincts rubbing as you work on it will not help.  If the stain is from say red wine putting salt on the stain will help because it will pull the stain up and out.  Using club soda to dab the stain will also help as it contains sodium.  This will also work with white wines.  If the stain is grass based, blood, or food you will want to pre-treat the stain before washing.  If you have a stain remover that works great but you can also just use the regular detergent you have on hand.  Apply a small amount to the stain and rub it “gently” then wash as usual.

One of the hardest stains to deal with are the yellow arm pit stains that can come from deodorant.  These stains come from the aluminum in the deodorant.  Switching to an aluminum-free product will help but if you already have the stains then use an oxygenated bleach or enzyme basted one to pre-treat these stains before washing.
