If you iron clothing then set up your ironing supplies.  An over the door type ironing board is a really great purchase if you do not have one that is built in.  Many big box stores carry  do it yourself ironing systems that can be installed pretty easily.  This will serve to cut clutter in your laundry room over the long run. Place any fabric starch you may use with your ironing board and iron.  If you need a small shelf for storage then by all means put one up.

Where do you place your clothing as you either take it out of the dryer or as you iron?  A good clothing rod is worth its weight in gold.  Keep plenty of hangers on it and the hanging of your garments straight out of the dryer will become easy.  When you are ironing it will also be a huge help as you can place the ironed clothes directly on the rod.

Once you have your laundry room or area cleaned, organized and ready you can turn your attention to the laundry itself.  To get better organized in the coming year look at how your dirty laundry is stored.  Do you have a system?  If not the first step is to make certain you have proper container for laundry to be deposited in.  Baskets, linen or canvas bags, and rolling organizers are all things that can be used.  Place one in each bathroom or bedroom and then teach your family what it is for!  If your children are old enough begin to teach them how to do laundry.  Even smaller children can gather and bring their own laundry to the designated laundry area.

As children get older they can do their own laundry with the appropriate training.  This is a huge help and if they each have a specific laundry day laundry never piles up!  Taking the time to train then now will result in less stress for you later.  One of the first things to teach them is to sort laundry by lights, dark’s, and dedicates.  Even if you place them in the washer at least you will save time if they are pre-sorted.

Everyone in the family can fold and out away their own laundry. When you are organizing the laundry room make certain to include a folding area of some type.  This will give an area specific for the folding and then place clothes into the original basket for returning to drawers or closets.  When everyone works on laundry it becomes less of a chore.

One really easy, super organizational tip is to make certain one load of laundry gets done per day.  This means all the way done from wash to dry to fold and put away.  You will be surprised at how much this keeps the Mount Wash-more at bay.  No matter how busy you get doing this one practice will give you peace of mind in the new year.  Hopefully you will be able to implement and then keep this laundry resolution throughout the year.

Laundry Resolutions for the New Year

fluff and fold Raleigh NCFor the most part, the holidays are over and its time to move on to welcoming a New Year.  Most of the time we welcome the New Year by making some resolutions.  The question quickly becomes “Can we keep them”?  Making a resolution is easy but keeping the resolution is harder.  Many folks will resolve to lose weight.  Some to eat healthier.  A good many will resolve to become more organized in the new year.

Laundry Resolutions | Fluff and Fold Raleigh NC

If you are one of those “Get Organized” persons then this blog post may be perfect for you.  We are going to begin the New Year by getting our “Mount Wash-More” under control.  This is that mountain of laundry that seems never ending.  If your New Year resolution is to finally see the end of this particular mountain for good then you will appreciate the following tips for getting your laundry organized and under control.

The first thing you will want to do is to empty your laundry room or area out totally.  This means take everything out including any cabinets and drawers.  Once emptied give everything a thorough cleaning.  Clean your washing machine and dryer as well.  Mope the floor and reline any drawers and shelving.

Once everything is clean then you can take stock of your detergent, fabric softeners, stain removers, and dryer sheets. This is a good time to stock up on what you will need to do your family’s laundry.  Get rid of anything you are not currently using or maybe purchased but did not particularly like.  Organize what you use by putting each item where you need it.  This means washing detergent, stain removers, and fabric softeners by the washer and dryer sheets by the dryer.

Cutting Closet Clutter

fluff and fold raleigh ncThe holiday’s will soon be a memory for this year and we will be more than ready to start clearing out and cleaning up all those decorations.  Along with that comes trying to find room for all of our stuff.  We already had plenty but we are willing to bet that the holidays brought you even more.  Today we are going to address our closet clutter and how to get things under control to get our New Year off to a better start.

Cutting Closet Clutter | Fluff and Fold Raleigh NC

Our biggest clutter challenge is our closets.   We tend to stuff them as full as possible because after all out of sight means out of mind…Right??  Well sort of.  The problem is that eventually they become so overstuffed we have trouble finding our things.  This leads to frustration and spending more money because we can’t find or locate the things we need.  If this sounds familiar to you then this post is for you.  Let’s look at our various closets and see how we can get them more organized and clutter-free.

First things first.  Pick one closet at a time.  Declutter it!  This means taking everything out and giving the closet a really good cleaning.  Once this is done sort through the items you just removed.  Make three piles.  One for keeping, one for donating, and one for throwing away.  Go through each item carefully.  Is it worn out or stained?  Toss it.  Can someone else use it?   Donate it.  Is it still serviceable for you?  Then keep it.  Make sure you do not keep multiples.  This will especially apply to bedding and linens.  Keep enough for your family’s use but donate all extras.

If you need more organization then research and purchase a closet organization system that works for you.  Some have shelving or racks for shoes, purses, etc.  Some have baskets or boxes to help organize things.  Just pick one that will help you get control of the clutter.

A great rule to adopt once you have the clutter under control is to buy something you need but then give something away.  One in, One out.  This will help keep the clutter from forming again.  Once you know what you have it is so much easier to fill in your actual wearable wardrobe.

When you have spent the time to get your closets organized you will hopefully want to keep them that way.  This can really cut down on your morning routine.  Grouping outfits together will be easier if you develop a system such as pants, shirts, skirts, dresses, all together.  You can also do this by color range.  Picking an outfit for the day will become so much easier and save you loads of stress in the mornings.  This can carry over to each family members closet.

In your storage closets you can apply much the same principles.  For off season clothing storage place the items in larger plastic containers and put them back and away from the front of the closet.  If you have the extra room keep seasonal decorations in the same type of containers.  Label each season and when you need them you will know exactly which closet and also what container the decorations are in.

Laundry Care Tips and Tricks

coin laundry raleigh ncThe Holidays are now upon us and we seem to have less time than ever to keep up with our normal everyday chore and all the holiday events we have going on. Maybe you are pretty good at keeping up with the normal everyday laundry your family has, but this time of year it is very easy to get behind.  Never fear we have some tips and tricks to help you stay caught up this crazy, hectic, season.

Tips and Tricks | Coin Laundry Raleigh NC

First things first.  You will want to stay on top of the laundry each day.  This will mean doing at least one load of laundry per day all the way through. This means wash, dry, fold, and put away.  If you can manage one load a day then by weeks end you will be ahead of the game.  Always make certain the entire family is on board so that the clothes are rounded up and ready for laundering.

Stay super organized this time of year.  This will mean checking your laundry supplies and replenishing them as needed.  There is nothing more stressful to a busy family than getting ready to do a load of laundry and finding you are out of supplies.  Stock up early on and check supplies weekly.  The bigger your family the more laundry you have, the more supplies you will need.

Teach each family member to get their laundry together.  This means each person has a laundry basket to place their clothing in.  Make certain they understand that this is the only acceptable place for their dirty clothing.  Not the floor, or the closet, or under the bed!  Once this is made clear and is in use it will be easier to locate and actually do the laundry in a timely manner.  Also teach them to point out any stains that may need pre-treating.  This will prevent headaches on laundry day for you and less chance of permanently ruined clothing.

If you really want help with the laundry then you must get the family on board. Even very young children can help!  Show children how to fold and put away their own laundry.  Older children can learn to operate the washer and dryer and do their own laundry.  Assign each a specific day for their laundry and eliminate some of the never ending laundry chore for yourself.

This is a great time of the year to begin getting clutter under control.  Organize and clean out those full closets and drawers.  You will gain much needed space by getting rid of any outgrown clothing and keeping only clothes that fir properly and are in good repair.  Toss any stained or irreparably torn items.  This will free up room for all those Christmas gifts you all may have received.  A good way to get kids involved is to have them put on a fashion show of sorts.  Check to see items fit and then toss if needed.  This will get the New Year off to a great start.

Check to see if you need to add extra storage solutions to your closets.  Sometimes we have plenty of room but it does not appear so because we don’t have the right storage.  Add storage by placing a basket unit or plastic drawer storage units in  the closets or bedrooms as you have room.
