Welcome back! We here to talk more about winter organization! If you missed our previous blog, check back with it for more info!

More Winter Organization! | Laundromat Raleigh NC

When it comes to all things the winter weather brings, landscape damage is one of the worst. Heavy snow and particularly ice can really damage your shrubs and trees. As a homeowner you must be very diligent about checking for damage on your trees and shrubbery after each and every winter storm. Snow, ice, and winds can cause all kinds of damage some of which can be irreparable especially if you do not take action immediately. The next couple of blog posts will provide you with ways in which you can help trees and shrubs recover from the effects of a winter storm.

If you have had a winter storm of any kind in your area there are a few rules on how to clean up after a storm. If the storm produces snow then after the storm clears you can sweep the snow that might be weighting the branches down. Use a broom and always sweep in an upward fashion. Never sweep down as doing so can result in more broken branches than needed. If freezing temps have frozen the snow on your branches let the snow melt before attempting to sweep it. Never attempt to shake or knock the snow off. This can certainly cause damage!

Practice a bit of  patience until the storm passes and melting of the snow or ice occurs. We know you are anxious to get started on your decorating. Trees and shrubs weighed down with snow and ice  cannot be helped while still frozen.  Rest assured if you have bent branches, but they are not broken you can help them to recover. Many will recover on their own with not special help but if they need special care you can find many experts to help you know what to do for your trees and plants.

We’ve got more tips in or next blog post so be sure to stay tuned!

How To Choose The Best Dryer Cycle

One of the most used appliances in our homes is also one that did not change very much over the years. The clothes dryer operated on a basic principle of injecting heated air into the dryer and then drawing moisture out while clothes were tumbled around in a drum. This was the way it worked in every make and model whether gas or electricity powered it. The only decision one had to make was what temperature to set and for how long the cycle should run. Nothing at all like the choices on a washer. Today’s version still operates on the same basic principle but have some added features.

Dryer Cycles | Laundromat Raleigh NC

Setting the same exact cycle for every laundry load you do is not the way to get the best results. If you have loads of varying sizes or types you will want to choose the right cycle for proper drying. The following are some of the cycles you might use to properly dry your clothes.

  • Delicate or the Gentle Cycle:  When you need to take good care of any delicate clothing items you may have to choose this cycle. Things like your bras, and panties or lacy thinner items all fall into this category. Silks, rayon’s, or anything with embellishments such as embroidery should be dried on a gentle cycle. Some types of exercise clothing should also be dried on this cycle.  Many of these types of clothing cannot withstand higher heat cycles and this can damage them as well.
  • Air Dry or Air Fluff: When this cycle is chosen there is no heat involved. Your dryer will pull in fresh room temperature air and then tosses the clothes to fluff them up. It will also remove any lint, pet hair, or dust from the fabric.  Many use this cycle to fluff pillows, and things that are down filled such as comforters or outerwear. Most like to add a few wool dryer balls or plain ol’ tennis balls to help with the fluffing. When you are taking seasonal clothes from storage this cycle can help freshen them up. Add some dryer sheets or add essential oils to your dryer balls to help add the freshness. This can also help get out any wrinkles that have formed.
  • Permanent Press or Wrinkle Resistant Cycle: This will likely be the most used cycle on your dryer. This cycle is used for pretty much all of your other clothing. Most of your pants, shirts, dresses, jackets, and all items that are non-cotton. This is a medium heat setting that helps prevent wrinkles and the damage of higher heat. Many of the dryers manufactured today also have a cool down period that is around 10 minutes that helps keep wrinkles from forming.
  • Regular, Timed, or Automatic Cycles: This is the cycle to use for drying your towels, jeans, shirts, and sweats. The automatic cycle will use a moisture sensor to help decide when the clothes are dry. The regular will use the highest heat setting available so use it cautiously. The timed cycle is just that, you choose what length of time you need for your clothes to get dry.

Choosing The Best Wash Cycle

Have we all been there, right? A small mountain of laundry to do and need to decide what is the best way to accomplish the task. From the sorting of loads into the proper pile to choosing the right detergent, it can seem complicated. When it comes to choosing the right wash cycle, however, we can offer some great tips. If you can get down the basics of choosing the proper wash cycle then your clothes will get cleaner, last much longer, and will always look their best.

Best Wash Cycle | Raleigh Laundromat

It is important to note that washers have changed a whole lot over the last few decades. What used to be a simple wringer washer with no type of gadgets has morphed into technological, sleek, and much more complicated machines. The options for wash cycles seem unlimited which can be confusing and look complicated. The good news is that while once we were limited to a few choices now we can select the proper settings to keep our clothes looking their best. Most of these newer machines are designed to save us money as well.

The first step in the task of doing the laundry is a really important one, sorting. If you have clothes that are similar in color they can be washed together as one load. Often this may be a smaller load but in order to wash them properly, they need to be washed together. For example, you may have clothes that are dark in color. These need to washed in cold water so that there is less chance of colors bleeding on your other clothes. Cold water washing also keeps them from fading. Similarly, you will need to wash whites together to keep them white. Warm water settings can be used with your whites and bleach if needed. Once you have a habit of sorting your clothes into the proper loads the laundry task will get easier.

Every time you do a load of laundry there are three separate choices you will need to make:

  • Load Size and/or water level
  • Water Temperature for the wash and the rinse cycles
  • Cycle setting

The load size is usually either small, medium, large, or super. The following is a general idea from which to choose:

  • Small – 1/4 of the way full
  • Medium – 1/2 full
  • Large – More than 1/2 full
  • Super – Full capacity

Making the right choice for water temperature is crucial to helping your clothing to not stretch, fade, or shrink. To make certain you use the proper temperature examine the clothing label inside your garment. This will give you the correct information you need to wash your clothing the right way. Old school thinking was that only hot water washing would get clothes as clean as possible. Today we know that this is not true. Cold water washing will not harm fabrics and will save you money on utilities. Many detergents are formulated today to be used in cold water and will get your clothes really clean.

Get Sports Gear Clean at a Laundromat

Some of the hardest to clean items for parents are sports gear. Fall and winter sports are some of the roughest. Dirt and grass gets really ground into the uniforms. Often they do not come clean when washed and need another go. Parents of kids that play sports are always looking for ways to get uniforms and gear cleaned. This post will address this laundry issue and help you with tips to get your child’s sports gear cleaner at the local Raleigh laundromat.

Raleigh Laundromat Tips for Sports Gear!

The laundromat is the perfect place for getting your sports gear cleaned up. Follow these instructions for figuring it all out:

  • Before you place the gear into the washer take the time to properly sort the items. Some things can be washed on a regular cycle and some cannot.
  • Bulky items will need to be separated from other clothing so that you do not overload the washer.
  • If there are removable liners or pads take them out before washing. These should be washed alone on a gentle cycle. Cold water will be best. Jerseys and things made of this material should also be gently washed and hung to dry.
  • If you see ground in dirt or grass stains you will want to pre-treat these stains. The sooner the better to keep them from setting in. Make it a rule that all sports gear must be checked immediately upon the return home.
  • Treat stains with a good oxygen based stain remover. One with added enzymes is also a great choice. Allow the stain remover to thoroughly saturate the stain and sit for about an hour or overnight. If using a laundromat allow for the proper time.
  • Wash as normal with a good detergent and a laundry booster. Check for remaining stains before you put items into the dryer.
  • If your sports attire items can be dried use caution. Use the lowest setting possible because high temperatures can cause shrinkage. Check carefully for any plastic parts that might melt. Air dry these to prevent a disaster.
  • When drying bulky pads it’s a good idea to place several tennis balls in the washer and the dryer with them. This will help keep the padding from separating from the garment.
  • We cannot stress enough the importance of not overloading either the washer or dryer. This will not only keep the items from getting clean it could also damage them. You do not want to have to re-wash or replace items because of this.

We know that keeping your little All-Star looking good is a priority so we hope these tips for getting their sports gear clean at the laundromat have helped. If you are ever in doubt about how to wash or dry any of your child’s sports gear ask an attendant. They can also advise if certain sports attire can damage a washer or a dryer. Just take the time to ask to prevent this from happening.
