Ironing Guide | Raleigh Laundromat

One of the first things you will need to do is find a really good iron.  There are many different types on the market today.  Of course some are more pricey than others. A good steam iron needs to be able to perform many functions but does not have to be the most expensive on the market.  Your iron should have a consistent temperature and get hot enough to handle the heaviest of fabrics.  It should have a good selection  of heat settings to allow for different fabrics.  Loads of steam is also a basic need.  Be sure the iron releases a lot of steam on every setting.  Some irons will come with many other features, but these are the basics.  You may want to invest in one that shuts off automatically after left unattended for a specific amount of time.  Today many have digital settings and many other features, however they are not a necessity in order to iron your clothes.

Another consideration is your ironing board.  It is really easy to just grab a towel and attempt to iron an just any flat surface such as your bar, dining table, even the bed.  However your best pick is an actual ironing board.  These are usually just basically simple.  There are not many to choose from.  Like an iron you can find some that are a bit fancier such as a build in that might have a light, electric source, and perhaps a shelf.  You can also find types that fit over-the-door, and even small ones that you can use just about anywhere.  Your personal preference and budget will help you decide what is best for you.  The main thing here is to keep the cover clean at all times so that dirt is not transferred onto your garments when ironing.

Practicing | Raleigh Laundromat

When you are ready to practice try pressing a shirt.  Undo all buttons, including the cuffs.  Working from the outside in start with your sleeves.  Smooth them flat, spritz with water or spray starch, and use use the steam feature to release wrinkles. Cuffs may need more attention to detail.  Once you have the collar done proceed to work over the body of the shirt.   Once done you will need to hang the shirt quickly as it can re-wrinkle very easily.  If you have delicate items you can use a towel or parchment paper between the garment and the iron.  Always remember to adjust your heat setting according to the type of fabric your garment is made of.
