Establishing a Laundry Routine – Choosing the Best For You!

folded-443509_640Last time we talked about what goes into establishing a laundry routine.  There are briefly several questions you must ask yourself before attempting to calm the beast know as our laundry.  We first need to establish how many loads of clothes and other items need to be done in a week.  Next how much time do you have to spend on this never ending chore. Lastly we need to decide what types of stuff need to be washed and how often they need washed.

Once these basic questions have been answered we are ready to choose which laundry routine works for us.  There are several steps that will help us get organized and more toward a good maintainable routine for the laundry.

Step 1:  This step involve deciding where to place whatever means you will use to collect your laundry.  This includes baskets, hampers, and organizer sorters.  These will be used to help with not only collecting but sorting the clothing ahead of time.  Make this simple enough even for the children in the family.  Figure out the locations that work best and place your laundry collection container there.  These location include bathrooms, bedrooms, and of course the mudroom where you enter the house.  You do not want to go overboard with the amount of containers since you will also need to collect them for the wash day.

Step Two:  Now that you have established where to collect the laundry throughout the home and gathered the necessary containers its time to implement the system you have chosen.  Sorting the laundry is one of the most time consuming parts of doing the laundry.  You may have the room to add additional baskets or hampers to allow the family to sort the whites, dark’s, and colors for you ahead of time.  If so this will greatly cut down on your time.  If not at least make sure you have a way to sort them easily in your laundry area. If this is a separate laundry room then there are a variety of of laundry sorters available to make this job even easier.  Some are even stackable to save room.

Step Three:  Gathering, Sorting, Washing and Drying the clothing is just the first half of this time consuming chore.  You must put a great deal of thought into how the cleaned laundry will get folded, and returned to its proper location and put up.  A good way to do this is to have a set of rotating baskets used to not only carry the laundry to the laundry room but to also carry it back when done.  Just as we do not want our laundry to pile up when its dirty we certainly do not want it to pile up when its clean.

Step Four:  The last step in establishing a great working system for laundry is to develop a system or routine that WORKS for YOU and your family.  Some like doing a load a day…all the way through from wash to putting up…every single day.  For others twice a week or every other day works well also.

Of course the key to not only establishing a routine is consistency.   We hope you have found some helpful ideas when it comes to getting organized and ready to calm the stress laundry can cause.  If something does not work for you then keep looking for solutions.  In our next blog we will talk about ways to involve the entire family in the routine of keeping the laundry done!
