Today, we want to introduce ways you can use less energy, water, and chemicals in your laundry routine.  We all know that “going green” is a truly awesome way to help make our earth better and there are many ways we can do that in our everyday routines that take little effort.  Washing clothing is the largest water and energy users in our home. That takes a lot of our time and our money!  These great tips we are offering up today will however go a long way toward helping you not only continue with the great laundry routine you have established but it will help you make it as green as possible.

The first step is really the easiest one for us to implement.  Set your washer to cold water.  Contrary to what you may think this does not affect stains on your clothing at all.  In fact stains do not set in cooler water as they will in warmer water.  This is where the energy savings will really apply.  90% of the energy used in your washer is in the heating of the water.  If you are worried about heavily dirty items then pre-soak in lukewarm water and detergent first.  This will help get them clean as possible.

Next you will want to make sure you are using your washer and dryer effectively.  As we have noted before be sure you know your machines and use the settings as instructed.  Do not overload but run full loads as much as possible.  We know that sometimes you will need to run smaller loads but be careful to only use the shortest setting possible.  Remember the drying time will be shorter also.   If you can hanging clothes outside to dry or hanging garments in the laundry room if you have space is another great way to save energy.  Dryers also use more energy than any of your others appliances.  This means you will want to be sure you are using them as efficiently as possible.

Another really great green tip is to explore laundry products on the market today.  Many companies offer detergents and fabric softeners that are Eco-friendly and clean as well as harsher products.  They also offer many unscented products for those with allergies to harsher ingredients.  You can also use much less of these products than others so that you are not only saving money but keeping the environment and yourself safer in the long run.
