Establishing a Laundry Routine – Tips

Laundry Tips for a New Routine | Wash Dry Fold Raleigh NC

Believe it or not one of the most dreaded and hated chores around the house is doing the laundry!  As we have been talking about over the last couple of blogs more than half of the battle is establishing a laundry routine that works for you and your family.  From finding the perfect baskets and hampers to deciding which days you devote to this time consuming chore you can create and maintain a great routine.

One of the most important parts of taking control and creating order is to involve the family.  It is the key to to begin gaining control and hopefully even loving this chore a bit more.  One of the reasons for dis-liking this chore so much is that it seems never ending with no schedule and no help.   Depending on how small or how large your family is the jobs associated with doing the laundry can be broken down into easily managed tasks by all ages.  The first thing you will have to keep in mind is they will make mistakes.

If your children are old enough they can help with gathering the laundry baskets and carrying them down to the laundry room or area.  This task will be easier if everyone has helped to pre-sort the clothing into whites, dark’s, and colors.  Also keep in mind that delicate’s will need a place of their own.   Once sorted it will be easy to carry that days laundry to the washer for you.

Explaining to the children the difference between clothing that is ready for washing and clothing that is gently worn will also help cut down on unnecessary washing.  Church type clothing is an example of this if only worn briefly and not showing signs of obvious dirt or stains.   Teach them to hang up those articles of clothing as soon as they shed them.

A great tip for avoiding set in stains is to also to teach all members of the family to point out stains for pre-treating as soon as they possibly can.  Another tip is to put clothespins on the side of the laundry baskets and have them pin one to any clothing that may need extra attention.   Also teach them to clean out the pockets of pants and shirts and to turn clothing the right way to save on time later.

Kids also love to help with chores that let them use the machines.  Let them help load the washer and then help transfer clothing to the dryer.  Adding the laundry detergent you have measured out or putting the dryer sheet in the dryer are both ways to begin teaching them the mechanics of washing clothes.  Kids also can match socks and help fold linens such as towels, washcloths, and dish towels at a very early age.  Older children can help fold bulky items such as bedding, sheets, and blankets.

Laundry is a fact of life for all of us so it is a very good idea to get children involved at a very early age.  As stated earlier yes they will make mistakes but the life skills you teach them will stay with them and make them responsible adults later on.  Establishing and maintaining a laundry routine will have a tremendous effect on the smooth running of your home  with less stress and more fun for all.
