Washing full loads is great for large households and saving water, but there’s a big difference between full loads and overstuffed loads! Overstuffing leads to a load of problems. The clothing doesn’t get clean, the washer can start malfunctioning, the spin cycle can’t keep up, etc. In order to make sure you’re not overstuffing your washer, take note of these helpful tips:
- Top loading washing machines are able to handle up to 16 pounds of clothing.
- Front loading washing machines are equipped to handle up to 20 pounds of items.
- Fill your washer only three quarters of the way to the top of the drum if you aren’t weighing your clothing to ensure that you don’t overfill!
Soap Dispensing
It’s a common practice for those that are washing to add the clothes and then the soap. In reality, that’s not the best practice. Adding soap and then clothing allows the detergent to dissolve in the water. Then, when your clothes are added, they’ll not only get cleaner, they’ll be less likely to come out without a residue left from poor soap dispersion.

Borax or washing soda works great to whiten clothing, soften water, and deodorize laundry, in general. Adding them together is great, but even only adding one can make a world of difference in your laundry load. Use a half a cup each, per load to make sure they don’t end up dissolving and clumping.
