How To Choose The Best Dryer Cycle

One of the most used appliances in our homes is also one that did not change very much over the years. The clothes dryer operated on a basic principle of injecting heated air into the dryer and then drawing moisture out while clothes were tumbled around in a drum. This was the way it worked in every make and model whether gas or electricity powered it. The only decision one had to make was what temperature to set and for how long the cycle should run. Nothing at all like the choices on a washer. Today’s version still operates on the same basic principle but have some added features.

Setting the same exact cycle for every laundry load you do is not the way to get the best results. If you have loads of varying sizes or types you will want to choose the right cycle for proper drying. The following are some of the cycles you might use to properly dry your clothes.

  • Delicate or the Gentle Cycle:  When you need to take good care of any delicate clothing items you may have to choose this cycle. Things like your bras, and panties or lacy thinner items all fall into this category. Silks, rayon’s, or anything with embellishments such as embroidery should be dried on a gentle cycle. Some types of exercise clothing should also be dried on this cycle.  Many of these types of clothing cannot withstand higher heat cycles and this can damage them as well.
  • Air Dry or Air Fluff: When this cycle is chosen there is no heat involved. Your dryer will pull in fresh room temperature air and then tosses the clothes to fluff them up. It will also remove any lint, pet hair, or dust from the fabric.  Many use this cycle to fluff pillows, and things that are down filled such as comforters or outerwear. Most like to add a few wool dryer balls or plain ol’ tennis balls to help with the fluffing. When you are taking seasonal clothes from storage this cycle can help freshen them up. Add some dryer sheets or add essential oils to your dryer balls to help add the freshness. This can also help get out any wrinkles that have formed.
  • Permanent Press or Wrinkle Resistant Cycle: This will likely be the most used cycle on your dryer. This cycle is used for pretty much all of your other clothing. Most of your pants, shirts, dresses, jackets, and all items that are non-cotton. This is a medium heat setting that helps prevent wrinkles and the damage of higher heat. Many of the dryers manufactured today also have a cool down period that is around 10 minutes that helps keep wrinkles from forming.
  • Regular, Timed, or Automatic Cycles: This is the cycle to use for drying your towels, jeans, shirts, and sweats. The automatic cycle will use a moisture sensor to help decide when the clothes are dry. The regular will use the highest heat setting available so use it cautiously. The timed cycle is just that, you choose what length of time you need for your clothes to get dry.
