Back To School Laundry Tips

It’s been a long hot summer here in the triangle area.  Kids have had endless fun in the pool, at the theme parks, riding bikes, and just being lazy on their summer school break.  All that fun is about to come to an end however as the school year is gearing up.  Along with a cool new backpack, and new school supplies kids will also be shopping for new clothes.  With a new school year and new clothes will come the inevitable stains only pens, pencils, crayons and markers can bring.  Today’s blog post will help address some of these stains and how to deal with this type of laundry problem.

The biggest problem you will find when it comes to children’s laundry is that they leave all kinds of things in their pockets.  The longer these items remain hidden away the worse it will be to clean the stains.  Trust us, It is much easier when you teach them to point out stains while they are fresh.   Immediate pre-treatment of your stained items is important.  The following are some great tips for getting those back to school stains out of your children’s clothes.

Tips | Raleigh Laundromat

  • If you determine the stain to be from a regular pencil the removal is easy.  It can be removed the same way you remove a pencil mark on paper.  Keep a clean eraser in your laundry arsenal.  Use it to rub the pencil mark off the item.  Once you have it removed apply some liquid laundry detergent and rub it in.  Rinse the detergent out and then you may launder the item as usual in your washing machine.
  • If you determine the stain to be from a crayon this to is easy to remove.  Apply a liquid laundry detergent to the area covering it completely and then allow the item to sit overnight.  Launder as usual and before drying make certain stain has been removed.  If needed repeat the steps.
  • The worst stain to remove is one from ink.  This type of stain is more time consuming and may require lots of patience. Round up some paper towels or a terry cloth towel.  You will also need some dry cleaning solvent or rubbing alcohol.  Take a good look at the care label of the garment to be certain you won’t harm the fabric. Using a paper towel or a cloth apply the dry cleaning solvent or rubbing alcohol onto the stain directly.  You will then use a clean towel or cloth to dab the stain until there is no ink left.  Rinse well and then you will rub some liquid detergent into the stain area. Launder in the hottest water temperature that is safe for the item. Repeat as necessary.  Make sure you do not dry the garment until you are certain the stain is gone.  Doing so will set the stain and make it almost impossible to remove.
  • Take some time to help your children understand how important it is to point out any stains they get on their clothing during the school day.  Grass stains and mud stains are also two that need treated as soon as possible.
